Based on the patient’s clinical presentations, I would have agreed a trial of Latuda as an
appropriate antipsychotic drug. The clinical presentations significant for this type of
antipsychotic drug included mania and psychosis, which are associated with a bipolar disorder.
The 71-year old Caucasian female presented the ideation of mania and psychosis while reporting
her chief complaint. Latuda is an antipsychotic medication that is helpful in treating symptoms
associated with bipolar disorder such as mania and psychosis (WebMD, 2023). According to the
DSM-5-TR, symptoms of mania and psychosis associated with bipolar disorder include an
elevated mood that persists for at least a week (American Psychiatric Association, 2022). Other
symptoms may include hallucinations, engaging in risky behaviors, and sleep disturbances.
Having reported mania and psychosis, I therefore agree a trial of Latuda as an appropriate
I strongly feel that bipolar disorder with manic and psychotic features is the appropriate
differential diagnosis for the patient. The rationale for my strong feelings includes the report of
mania and psychosis while presenting the chief complaint. Besides, the patient’s mental status
examination indicates the symptoms of mania and psychosis, which are associated with the
bipolar disorder. Besides, the patient’s delusional thoughts are a reflection of bipolar disorder
with manic and psychotic features (Fletcher, 2023). The mental status examination also
indicated that the 71-year old Caucasian female had symptoms of depression, anxiety.
I would not expect other diagnostic tests for this patient other than the mental
examinations and using the DSM-5-TR diagnostic criteria. This criterion uses diagnoses a patient
