related Engineering Specifications and this specification, the order of priority shall be as
below;

1. SPECIFIC DESIGN CONDITION

2. This specification
3. Related Engineering Specifications
4. Codes and Standards

2. MATERIAL

2.1 Reinforcing Bar

2.1.1 Reinforcing bar shall conform to ASTM A615/A615M

Min. Yield Strength : fy = 4200 kg/cm2 (or 420 MPa or Equivalent)

2.1.2 The Contractor may select any particular chemical analysis or composition of steel so
long as the specified mechanical properties are met. However, Mill certificates including
both mechanical properties and chemical composition shall be submitted to LCI prior to

start the work.

2.2 Welded Steel Wire Fabric

Welded steel wire fabric shall conform to ASTM A185, JIS standards, or equivalent. Mill
certificate shall be submitted to LCI prior to start the work.

2.3 Accessories
Accessories, bar supports and etc., are used in placing the reinforcing bars to assure that the
bars are correctly positioned in relation to the forms. The varied accessories all serve the
basic function of supporting the reinforcing steel, in proper vertical position, enabling the bar
setters to space and position the bars accurately. The bar supports shall be heavy enough
and numerous enough to support the bars properly.

3. EXECUTION AND WORKMANSHIP

3.1 General

3.1.1 Reinforcing bar shall be free from loose rust, scale, mud, oil, grease, paint or other
coatings that may prevent or reduce the bond.

3.1.2 Welding of cross bars shall not be permitted for the assembly of reinforcement unless
authorized by LCI. Spacer blocks shall be either Precast concrete or of cement mortar or
made out of PVC as approved by LCI.

3.1.3 Random length straight bars shall be identified with a metal tag to show the number of
bars, diameter and length.

3.2 Bending of Reinforcing Bar

Bending of reinforcing bars shall be done by machine or other approved methods producing
gradual and even motion. Cutting and bending of reinforcement bar shall be done only in cold
conditions.

3.3 Execution of Reinforcing Bar Work

3.3.1 Reinforcing bars shall be fabricated in the shop located at site. At this shop, benders,
cutters and work benches shall be used to execute all bending and cutting. The
fabricated reinforcing bars shall be transported to the appropriate work areas.

3.3.2 Reinforcing bars Storage

All Reinforcing bars (raw steel) as well as fabricated reinforcing bar shall be stored on
rigid platforms or grillages at least 300 mm above the existing ground level and shall be
protected from dirt, running water and oil.
Fabricated reinforcing bar shall be stacked diameter wise and bending schedule or
detailed drawing wise for easy identification and transportation to the site.

3.3.3 Bars bent incorrectly shall not be rebent without LCI approval.

3.4 Workmanship

3.4.1 Placing of rebar shall be carried out strictly in accordance with the detailed drawing. The
bars shall be securely fastened with tie wire. The center to center distance (spacing)
between consecutive bars shall be in accordance with the detailed drawings.

3.4.2 Reinforcing bars used in slabs, footings, rafts and etc. shall conform to the bar size,
dimensions, number and spacing as shown on the schedule and the detailed Drawings.
Pins used for beam reinforcement shall also have similar functions like chairs.

3.4.3 Coverage for reinforcement

The clear coverage for reinforcement shall be in accordance with the detail drawing.

3.4.4 Fixing of reinforcing bar

Bars intended to be in contact at the crossing points shall be securely wired together at
all such points with tie wire.

Two tie rods of at least 10 mm diameter shall be provided in the tip of all concrete
beams to fasten stirrups where no tip bar occurs.

Full continuity shall be provided over supports for all continuous slabs, beams and joints
unless otherwise noted.

All reinforcing bar within the limits of a day's pour shall be in place and firmly wired or
clipped in sufficient time to permit inspection before pouring concrete.

Bars protruding for future bonding shall be protected as directed by LCI.

3.4.5 Welding of reinforcement

Reinforcement in structures shall not be welded except where approved by LCI. All
welding procedures shall be subject to the prior approval of LCI in written.

3.4.6 Splice (Laps)

Bar Lapped splice shall be strictly in accordance with the standard drawings indicating
length and diameter of the bars

Splices shall be avoided from at the points of maximum stress. They shall be staggered
and shall be designed to develop the strength of the bar without exceeding the allowable
unit bond stress. All bar splices shall be approved by LCI.

Splices in welded wire fabric shall be made by lapping minimum of one spacing of

outermost cross wires of each fabric sheet plus 100 mm.

3.4.7 Reinforcing bar covering tolerances

Placed reinforcing bar shall inspected and approved by LCI. The Contractor shall submit
an Inspection Request Form 1 day prior to the desired day of inspection. This inspection
of the reinforcing bars must take place prior to the pouring of concrete.

The acceptable tolerances for concrete coverage are as follows:

Concrete Cover (mm ) Tolerance (mm )

20 +5, -5
40 +10, -5
50 +15, -5
80 +15, -5

3.4.8 All intersections of reinforcing bars shall be bound tight with black annealed tie wire
similar to the splice (Laps).

3.4.9 Disposal of scrap

Any leftover piece of bar after cutting, and which cannot be utilized and which is less
than 1.0 meter long shall be treated as scrap.

4. TOLERANCES FOR FABRICATING AND PLACING BARS

4.1 Tolerances for Fabricating Bar

Bar sizes #3(=D10) through #11(=D35)
Tolerances shall be referred to attachment hereunder or equivalent.

4.2 Tolerances for Placing Bars

5. INSPECTION

5.1 Before Installation

Verify that reinforcing bar is free of loose scale or rust and contaminants that would reduce the
bond with concrete.
Check that the reinforcement is of proper grade, quantity, size and length.

5.2 During Installation

1) Assume that reinforcement is placed within allowable tolerances.
2) Verify that bar supports are used where needed to secure reinforcing bar in position.
3) Check that lap splices are securely tied.
4) Check that wire fabric is overlapped.

5.3 After Installation

Check that reinforcing bar is kept in the position during placement of concrete.

6. SCAFFOLDING AND SUPPORTS

For placing prefabricated reinforcing bar at heights, adequate scaffolding shall be provide for
the workmen to work safely and for temporarily supporting long vertical bars to prevent their
displacement and sagging during concrete placing and vibration.
