The Department of Education in the Philippines launched a new basic education curriculum called MATATAG. The MATATAG curriculum aims to produce competent, job-ready, active, responsible, and patriotic citizens. It focuses on fewer but more essential learning competencies than the previous K-12 curriculum. Key changes include reducing the number of competencies from over 11,000 to around 3,600, removing or combining certain subjects in elementary and junior high, and integrating 21st century skills more clearly. The new curriculum is intended to address problems with irrelevant competencies and better prepare learners with foundational skills and for life after school.

Assignment 3: I have shared the MATATAG Curriculum in our GC. How
would you compare this with the K-12 Curriculum? Give your insights on the changes.
The Department of Education launched its new curriculum, the
MATATAG Curriculum. The Secretary of the Department of Education, Vice President Sara Z. Duterte said that the revised basic education curriculum is tailored to produce competent, job-ready, active, responsible, and patriotic citizens. "MATATAG" stands for "MAke the curriculum relevant to produce job- ready, active, and responsible citizens; TAke steps to accelerate the delivery of basic education services and provision facilities; TAke good care of learners by promoting learner well-being, inclusiveness learning, and positive learning environment; and Give support for teachers to teach better."
The K-12 Curriculum has 11,738 learning competencies while in
MATATAG Curriculum has only 3,664 learning competencies. There are subjects in K-12 Curriculum (Elementary and Junior High School) that will be removed under the MATATAG Curriculum. Just like for example in Grade I, the Mother Tongue subject, Filipino, English, Araling Panlipunan, MAPEH, and ESP will change to Language, Reading and Literacy, Mathematics, Makabansa, and GMRC. Its purpose is to focus on the basic skills that the learners need to learn and enhance the skills that they already learned. The MATATAG Curriculum also has a clearer integration of 21st-century skills, the Information, Media and Technology skills, Learning and Innovation skills, Communication skills, and Life and Career skills. The Senior High School curriculum under K-12 hasn’t changed in MATATAG curriculum. I can say that the MATATAG curriculum is a big help in addressing the problems with the learning competencies that are not relevant to teaching and learning. It helps the learners be prepared with strong literacy and numeracy foundation, equipped with 21st-century skills, and ready to succeed in life.
