Title: Junior Clinical Fellows (Lower Level) in Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Professionally accountable to: Medical Director via Clinical and Divisional Directors

Managerially accountable to: Supervising Consultant

Base: The Grange, University Hospital Cwmbran, South East Wales

Other hospitals at which duties are performed: In view of the fact that the organisation is currently undertaking a review of
its services and the locations at which they are undertaken, it is important to be aware that work patterns may change and
the place(s) of duties modified.

The Clinical Strategy of the Health Board is under constant development and the job holder may be required to undertake
different duties agreed at the time of appointment.

Purpose of the Post and General Responsibilities


Clinical work

Ward rounds of obstetric and gynaecological inpatients with the team, with ongoing day to day management of
inpatient problems, in consultation with senior colleagues
Participation in, with senior support:
 Early pregnancy assessment unit
 Emergency gynaecology assessment unit
 Obstetric Assessment Unit (Triage)
 Antenatal clinics
 Gynaecology clinics
 Labour ward
 Caesarean section lists
First on call for obstetric /or gynaecology emergencies, including main delivery unit (1 in 10 full shift) with direct
supervision of the registrar on call for the first 6 months at least
Assisting with major and minor gynaecology surgery, including the emergency (CEPOD) list.
Administrative work arising from inpatient and outpatient work including e-discharges

Teaching, training and audit

Teaching (ward based and small group) of medical students from University Hospital of Wales
Training of more junior medical staff including provision of work-based assessments
Attendance at multidisciplinary meetings
 Weekly oncology meeting
 Monthly clinical audit and clinical governance meetings including preparation of 1 or 2 multidisciplinary
audits annually
 Monthly Perinatal mortality and morbidity meetings including presentation of cases
 Monthly Joint Anaesthetic/Obstetric meeting
 Participation in multidisciplinary emergency skills and drills training on main delivery unit
Attendance and participation at weekly junior doctors teaching programme when rostered
Attendance at specialist clinics (on request)
 Colposcopy
 Outpatient hysteroscopy
 Urodynamics and urogynaecology
 Obstetric day assessment
 Amniocentesis
Participate in personal appraisal with educational supervisor within 2 weeks of starting the post and at 4 monthly
intervals

Undertake Work based assessments (Minicex, Case Based Discussions, Objective Structured Assessments of Technical
Skills, Team observations (multisource feedback)) with senior colleagues to assess progress, particularly in labour
ward management, communication and practical skills, as required by the RCOG and Wales Deanery
Access to training in STAN Fetal monitoring

Specific Responsibilities of the Post


The post holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and wellbeing and that of work colleagues, visitors
and patients within the hospital. This statutory duty is in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance
accountabilities associated with the post.

Finally, the post holder is expected to:


Observe the rules, policies, procedures and standards of Aneurin Bevan University Health Board together with all
relevant statutory and professional obligations
Observe and maintain strict confidentiality of personal information relating to patients and staff
Be responsible, with management support, for their own personal development and to actively contribute to the
development of colleagues

11 Specialist Registrars
3 Trust Grade Registrars
6 StR1/2 (one sexual health trainee)
5 StR1/2 on the General Practice Vocational Scheme (GPVTS)
7 clinical fellows
2 Foundation year 2 posts
