Teaching ESP

1. Context
The activity proposed below is aimed at a class of 25 Vocational Training students in the
area of Tourism as part of the ESP subject within the first training cycle. In this class we find
students between 18 and 30 years old with a medium-high level of English, corresponding
to the B1 established by the CEFR.

2. Purpose
English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is an approach to English language teaching aimed at
specific fields, such as scientific, technological, economic and academic fields. ESP is also a
discipline which aims to meet the needs of specific students by using methodologies and
materials connected to the discipline on which it is centred, and by focusing on the
language that is related to it. In this case, in order to carry out the activity, we will focus on
the area of tourism.

The purpose of the activity proposed below is to work on specific vocabulary focused on the
subject of travel and tourism through real situations that students of Vocational Training in
Tourism may encounter in their daily lives. In this way, they not only work on specific English
focused on travel and tourism, but also create meaningful learning for the students by
providing them with practical experience in real-life situations.

3. Content
In order to work on specific English related to the subject of travel and tourism in the first
cycle of Vocational Training in Tourism, I am going to use the role play technique. Before
carrying out this activity, the students will have previously worked on all the necessary
content to be able to carry out the activity satisfactorily.

To carry out the role play, I will create different cards on which the students have a
designated theme, the roles they have to adopt, as well as suggestions of vocabulary and
phrases that are frequently used in the context they have been assigned.

In groups of 2 to 4, they will have to simulate one of the following situations:

● Conversation in a hotel reception
● Conversation in a tourist office
● Conversation at an airport check-in desk.
● Solving a problem with a hotel manager.

In order to carry out this role play, students will first have 30 minutes to work in groups and
prepare the dialogue, and then they will have 20 minutes to carry out the conversation.

4. Language Skill

Therefore, through this activity, students will mainly work on oral expression, as they will
have to develop a conversation orally. However, although to a lesser extent, listening
comprehension will also be worked on, as the students will also adopt the role of receiver
during the role play.
