Contact lenses -

introduction
• Fitting of contact lenses is constantly
expanding as a result of more detailed
ophthalmological examinations, which are
made possible by new examination
methods and improved diagnostic
devices…
What is a contact lens?
• "Contact lens is a medical - cosmetic device used as
one of the possibilities of correction of refractive
errors and then applied for cosmetic, prosthetic,
therapeutic and preventive reasons".

It is in close proximity to the cornea and sclera,

thus forming, together with the tear lens, the
corrective optical system of the eye.
Introduction
• Why do we wear contact lenses?

• Many aspects:
- optical - accessory to glasses, offers better optical
display than glasses - especially at higher dioptres
- for defects where correction by glasses is not
possible (keratoconus,…)
• most for myopia correction
• aesthetic - not seen on the eye against glasses,
allergies
• sport - do not fog, in sweating do not slip from nose
• Background with other subjects - Anatomy and
physiology of the eye (Eye science), Spectacle and

• Given by EN ISO Standard
These include for example:
• Contact lenses and lens care systems
• Material requirements, optical and dimensional
properties
• Biological evaluation of medical devices
• Symbols for medical labels, signs and attached
information…
Types of contact lenses
• Scleral contact lenses
• Semiscleral lenses (corneoscleral) - the most
common
• Corneal contact lenses
