Introduction.

I n t ro d u c i n g ,

The global spread of COVID -19 has

affected our entire daily lives and
completely changed our attitudes towards
life. As social distancing is a basic need of
our times, our entire notion of how living,
working and recreational spaces function
is being challenged, making self -
sufficient, isolated places a new -age
necessity. As the world slowly opens up
and adapts to life in the middle of a
pandemic, multiple designers, brands and
manufacturers are faced with the
challenge of rethinking and redesigning
architectural spaces to effectively
navigate these unprecedented times.

“I think we’ll see wider corridors and doorways, more partitions

between departments, and a lot more staircases, [..] everything
has been about breaking down barriers between teams, but I
Name: Rima Baalbaki
don’t think spaces will flow into each other so much any more.”

WITH WASHABLE IMITATION LEATHER

Furniture in large public spaces can be used by hundreds or

even thousands of people from all kinds of places to sit, lean
against and touch the furniture. When it comes to sanitation
measures, furniture hygiene is very important in large spaces
such as community centers, shopping malls, universities and
even private homes. Proper and regular cleaning, disinfection
and maintenance of public furnishings by local facility
managers is critical to protect communities from the spread of
contagious diseases in high -traffic environments.

New designs of furniture
In Resta u rant s:

French designer Christophe Gernigon has

proposed the concept for suspended plexiglass
hoods to allow customers to return to restaurants
after the peak of the coronavirus pandemic.

Shaped like large lampshades, the

transparent Plex`eat hoods would be
suspended above tables. People would sit
underneath them while eating and drinking,
with the hoods potentially reducing the risk
of airborne infection.

Outdoor furniture
Some designers and clients are adding a creative twist to the outdoor dining approach.

In Amsterdam, a canal-side restaurant called Mediamatic ETEN has put

up small, greenhouse-style dining pavilions that each contain a round
table and two chairs.

In Denver, Zeppelin Development and craftsman Mathieu Mudie with

input from Dynia Architects, have created a series of wood-framed,

Another way to create flexible spaces is with flexible furniture.
There are several products that offer customizable configurations. The Murphy
Flexible Furniture Bed, used in our Resource Furniture projects 19th Street and Corte Del Bayo,
transforms a space from a bedroom into a cozy TV den. The closed configuration
Swing Sectional features a built-in sofa with a flat shelf above. When opened as a
bed, the cushions can be hidden within the seat, and the shelf and seat itself act
as support for the bed. With such an innovative system, additional rooms can be
created even if they are only needed for the night. 00/12

Configure furniture to encourage physical distancing

Physical distancing restrictions may continue in the short

term and through a predictable transition/recovery period.
Moveable physical barriers, such as partitions, may be
installed between seats or groups of seats to ensure social
distancing in waiting areas.
Also, placing a table between seats encourages spaced
seating and distance from others. Groups of three are also a
great way to encourage self-distancing.

All businesses need to ensure that there is 4 square meters of space per

Before corona ,the planning was
pointed to fit a big amount of people

aim changed to less seats in order to
keep people safe.

Wider spaces were created between

a separation was created.
