I believe in a world full of possibilities.
As a young child, the stories, myths and legends we were told always highlighted the
importance of possibility. What seemed impossible, became possible and prevailed over
doubt. This is still my mentality in 2019 and I believe it is the mentality any good designer must
have. I want to help people. I want to further refine my abilities, sharpen my mind and hone
my skills for the purpose of effecting positive change. I want us all to believe in the power of
possibility.
Our world is in need of designers to take a stand and solve the continuing problems we see
daily and listen to the problems brought to us by others. One goal of mine is to influence
nature friendly product design for companies. I am always drawn to the raw beauty of nature
and believe all products, systems and environments should follow and implement nature’s
principles. Carleton’s Industrial Design program, with its focus on the user and their needs
I would like to be part of the group of designers who have the clarity of mind to see areas of
need as opportunities, as spaces in which we can have the greatest impact on social justice
issues. Carleton offers me the opportunity to delve fully into design thinking, while also
learning from other disciplines, allowing me to further open my mind to a world of possibilities

Along Island Park Drive are street signs that have reached their end-of-
life and required replacing. After examining the existing street signs,
my project manager, Stephan Sdraulig, noticed design issues like poor
legibility and lack of brand identity. Upon discussing these issues, I was
delegated the task of redesigning the existing street signs.

Existing Street Sign.
Upon receiving my brief, I tried to learn more about the area to further understand the project. This meant going
to Island Park Drive and scanning the street signs in the environment to identify any issues. I took pictures of the
street signs, documented their dimensions, and examined their bracket systems. I researched existing designs,
legible fonts, sign contours, materials, printing methods, and ADA sign requirements.

Street Sign Concepts.
After examining the street signs in their natural environment and receiving a debriefing from my
supervisor, I proceeded with producing sign concepts by sketching basic thumbnail sketches and
then translating them into vector line-work in Adobe Illustrator. Below are a few examples of the sign
concepts. They were eventually printed in full-scale and in colour to be presented to my IDEG team
members. After receiving insightful comments, I proceeded with the design showcased on the next
page.
