ACCOUNTING 1110 – INTRODUCTORY FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING I – SECTION S15 (Fridays)

Course Presentation – Spring 2024

DESCRIPTION: The theory and practice of recording and reporting financial events for service and
merchandising businesses is the main focus. There is a heavy emphasis on problem solving. Being prepared for
each class with the previous assignments completed and having pre-read the following chapter to be dealt with
that day are mandatory for successful completion of this course.

COURSE WEB-SITE: The course web-site is on Moodle at http://courses.moodle.kpu.ca and is also accessible by
logging in to MyKwantlen and selecting My Courses (MyKwantlen can be accessed from the Kwantlen Home
page within the drop-down menu for Current Students).
This site has .pdf lecture notes, assignment information, exam dates and other course announcements.
ADDITIONAL MATERIAL: Assignments and additional material associated with the Textbook are available
through WileyPlus. You will need to access the course website for instructions on how to register for
WileyPlus. A WileyPlus Access Code is available with the purchase of the textbook (e-books are available).

A small note about assignments: While assignments may seem like a small component of your overall grade, It
has been found that those students who do their assignments tend to do much better on exams. It is in your
best interest to do your assignments!

COURSE POLICIES
USE OF EMAIL Email is the preferred and primary method of contacting the instructor. Please
use your Kwantlen email address only. Include ACCT 1110, section number
and name in the subject line. Other emails may be deleted.

As a rule, responses to emails will be within 48 hours.

CLASS FORMAT In-class on-campus plus online using Moodle and WileyPlus. Independent
student learning will include completing assigned readings, in-class
assignments, online assignments, and exams.

There may be interactive audio/video sessions if warranted by snowfall


campus closures.

ATTENDANCE Attending lectures is imperative. In the unfortunate event that a class is


missed, it is the student’s responsibility to catch up on missed material. Keep
in mind that this course is cumulative so missing even one class can impact
your entire semester.

Be on time to all lectures. As this is a professional course, you are expected to


demonstrate a professional work ethic and attitude.

ONLINE ASSIGNMENTS Students are expected to read the appropriate textbook chapters and the
chapter notes (on Moodle) on a regular basis. In-Class Assignments are
included in the Chapter Notes. Homework Assignments are to be completed
using WileyPlus. They are available to students at the end of a normally
scheduled class time and are due prior to the applicable Exam. Online
assignments will be worth a total of 10% of your grade and are critical for
understanding the course content. No late assignments are accepted.

TESTS and EXAMS There are no make-up tests or exams. If you miss a test or exam, you will
receive a grade of zero. Please note the dates so you can schedule your
personal commitments around these dates. Medical excuses must be
presented through email to the instructor and include documentation
prepared by a doctor that clearly states that the student was too ill to function
reasonably on the date of the test or examination. The University reserves the
right to contact the physician’s office, not to discuss confidential specifics, but
to verify that the note is legitimate. In this situation, contact the instructor as
soon as possible, so that an alternative may be arranged promptly.

You will not be permitted to write any test or exam without prior written
approval from your instructor.

ELECTRONICS Cell phones and all electronic devices should be out of sight and silent during
class time. Laptops and calculators are permitted in class for class work only.
Only calculators (non-programmable) are permitted for quizzes, tests, and
exams.

EXAM POLICIES • No cell phones, computers, data storage devices, ipods/ipads, electronic
translators, translation dictionaries, programmable calculators, palm
pilots, or similar electronic devices are permitted in exams. It is
recommended that you bring a watch (no smart watches) to exams as
these other devices are not permitted for time keeping or any other
purpose. Incidents involving the use of these devices during exams will be
handled similarly to incidents of cheating and plagiarism. See the policy at

• Cell phones must be turned off and placed at the front of the classroom
throughout the exam, if your cell phone rings during an exam, you will
receive an immediate penalty of 10%.
• Only approved examination papers, writing utensils and a financial
calculator (nonprogrammable) are permitted during examinations.
Personal belongings (bags, jackets, etc.) must be left at the front of the
class during exams.
• Part marks will only be awarded for incorrect answers if you show your
work.
• You will not be permitted to leave the exam room once the exam begins.
• All exams become the property of the instructor.

KWANTLEN UNIVERSITY Cheating is defined as any dishonest or deceptive conduct or attempted


CHEATING / PLAGIARISM conduct by which individuals or groups of individuals use or attempt to use
POLICY unauthorized aids, assistance, materials and methods to represent their
academic work, training and standards as other than they are.

Plagiarism is defined as an act in which an individual submits the work of


another as his or her own.

Kwantlen condemns all forms of cheating and will discipline students for
cheating in the following manner: All offences will be reported to the Dean’s
office
a) In the event of a first offence, a grade of zero will be awarded for
the assignment, test paper or analysis.
b) In the event of a second offence, a failing grade will be assigned in
the course in which the offence occurred.
c) In the event of a third offence, the student(s) will be expelled from
the University.
d) In the event that a first or second offence is serious enough to
merit stronger disciplinary action, the University may assign a higher
level of disciplinary action outlined above.
