CS 032 Intro to Computer Operating Systems Spring 2022

This is the official Syllabus for this course, a copy is filed with the Dean's office. It is also posted on the
Canvas site for this course. Certain parts may change as the semester progresses. The professor will
notify students of any change as soon as the change is determined to be necessary.

Course This course is an introduction to the inner workings of an operating


Description systems. It covers how memory is allocated in main memory and
secondary memory, how programs are executed as processes and
threads, multitasking and multiprocessing, networking, distributed
systems, system performance, and security. Students will study
various examples of an operating system such as Microsoft Windows,
Apple iOS or the Google Android operating system. (UC, CSU)
Prerequisites CS-011 Fundamentals of Computer Science with a grade of "C" or better.
Goals Students will demonstrate understanding of the various tasks performed
by a computer operating system. Students will demonstrate
understanding of how the operating system functions by answering essay
questions, true/false questions and various lab exercises.

Textbook There is NO textbook. The content for this course is online, in Canvas.

Required 1. Access to Internet - can be at home, at school, or else where.

Canvas Canvas will be used to supplement the classroom teaching. To


access Canvas, follow these instructions:

2. Login with your Delta email login and password
3. Select the appropriate course
You are now logged in to the class.

Important Dates January 31st: Last day to drop with a refund


February 6th: Last day to drop WITHOUT a W
March 21st: Last date to drop WITH a W

Attendance Attendance is Mandatory


An instructor may drop a student from class when absences
become excessive. Attendance is measured by logging into
Canvas once a week. 
Class Rules 1. Be Respectful; Respect yourself, Respect others in the class
and also Respect your instructor
2. Food and Drinks must NOT be consumed in the classroom.
Sealed bottles can be brought to class but must remained
sealed at all times.
3. Cell phones and electronic devices must be turned OFF and
must be remained out sight unless prior arrangement with
instructor
4. Inappropriate language, disruptive comments or behavior,
harassment and/or defacing of college property will not be
tolerated
5. Late arrivals, early departures or leaving and returning during
class are disruptive to the learning atmosphere in the classroom.
It does not show respect for your fellow students or your
instructor.
6. Failure to comply with above-mentioned rules will result in a
request to the Vice President of student services for your
removal from the class for non-cooperation.

DROPS You will be dropped from this course:


 Not taking the Syllabus quiz that is due by first Saturday of the
semester
 Excessive absentees and/or lateness to class.
 Not performing and submitting work required for this class.

Submission of
Assignments Assignments are due on the date indicated in Canvas. Emails
regarding personal emergencies or problems MUST be received
within 12 hours of the date and time the assignment is due. Time of
email receipt will be the time stamp in either the Canvas email, or
the Delta email system.

Asking Questions If you are having problems in the class, please email me or talk to me
after class.

Cheating Policy Collaboration on how to solve assignments is encouraged.


However, if assignments are found to be so similar, it will be
considered cheating and all parties will be penalized. Plagiarism
and cheating are serious violations of school policy and will not be
tolerated. Cheating on an exam or assignment will be duly
penalized.
