The University of the Philippines charter includes a multi-faceted mandate as the national
university of the Philippines, along with certain rights and responsibilities and a set of guiding
principles. I highlight here portions of the charter that are especially relevant to this application:
Guiding Principles
What are you passionate about (work, creative output, issues, communities…)?
I have an innate desire to pursue change and improvement, not only as a person but also in the
community. My parents, teachers, and mentors recognized this during my years of public school
and offered multiple opportunities to make a difference. These opportunities helped enhance my
leadership and teamwork skills, as well as my ability to develop and articulate a vision for
improvement and the recognition that doing so is not easy.
I believe the university and local community can develop stronger connections, enabling groups
of individuals to bring about significant improvements. As a result of this event, I hope to see
people forging new relationships with shared purpose - to improve life in our community.

While traveling to visit relatives in Australia last fall, I attended TEDxUWA with several of my
cousins. The highlight was meeting the two organizers, Jevin Parmar and Roland Miller. They
were thrilled to share their experience organizing an event and quick to encourage me to do
likewise.
After returning home, I did more research and came across this article: UNCP students organize
first-ever TEDx event. The article convinced me that I, along with other students at the
University of the Philippines, could also organize a TEDx event.
What is the name of the location of your TEDx event? Describe the location.
UPD occupies 493 hectares of prime land in Quezon City, featuring an array of both old and
new buildings, which house the various disciplines that offer comprehensive education covering
all facets of human behavior and development.
TEDxUP. For a theme, I recently heard Shaylyn Romney Garrett speak about how past
problems in America were solved, not by the government but by the community coming together
through associations, clubs, etc. The subtitle of the book, “the Upswing” she coauthored with
Robert D. Putnam reads “How America Came Together a Century Ago and How We Can Do It
Again”. Inspired by this talk, the theme is “Coming Together: Then, Now and In the
Future”
I intend to ask the community to match the quality of speakers and talks given at TEDxUWA and
other TEDx events. This includes the university community as well as others in Metro Manila.
The request for speakers will be launched as soon as the TEDx license is approved.
As requested, I agree to abide by the terms of the TEDx License Agreement and to follow
guidelines provided by TED for a university event.
