Failure mode
• Sulphur-induced corrosion of the copper wire causes a buildup of
conductive copper sulphide layer.
• The copper sulphide can bridge between different phases => short circuit
• We need a method to test corrosion.

Quantitative analysis

Wire corrosion test

• Copper wire (64 µm diameter) is exposed to oil.
The electrical resistance is monitored during
the test and thus the corrosion rate can be
determined
• The entire setup with beaker is immersed in
oilbath and heated to ~140 °C in the oil phase
and ~80 °C in the
vapour phase.
• The duration of the test was 96 hours (4 days).

Concluding remarks
• EP-type lubricants are corrosive towards copper, especially in the vapour
phase

• Dedicated fluids which combines the gear protection of MTF and

excellent copper corrosion protection is desireable but probably need
new types of chemistries to be developed
− I.e new type of scuffing protection and/or better corrosion inhibitors
