Starting in December 1988, the company also began producing 7 Up. Production of Pepsi and 7 Up by PT
Perusahaan Es Siantar will continue for several years.[27]

The bankruptcy of the Mantrust Group in the early 1990s, which caused distribution to suffer, did not
dampen PepsiCo's intention to embrace the soft drink business market in Indonesia. In October 1993 the
US company succeeded in signing a collaboration with the Salim Group to become the new license holder
for the production of Pepsi (and its "brothers" such as Mirinda, 7 Up and Mountain Dew) in Indonesia,
[28] and as part of the collaboration between the two, on December 22 In 1993, PT Pepsi-Cola
Indobeverages was founded, which was held by Salim (through PT Gapura Usahatama) 51% and PepsiCo
(through Seven Up Netherlands B.V.) 49%.[29] The first factories are located in Cikampek (West Java,
capacity of 50 million bottles/cans per year) and Semarang (Central Java, capacity of 3 million
bottles/cans per year) with an investment of US$ 17 million.[30] Then another factory was added in
Purwakarta with an investment of US$ 14.4 million.[28] Apart from these four soda drinks, PT Pepsi-
Cola Indobeverages then also produces the Tekita (bottled tea), Gatorade (isotonic drink), Sting (energy
drink), as well as Tropicana Twister and Fruitamin (fruit drink) brands.

On September 12 2013, PepsiCo's 49% stake in PT Pepsi-Cola Indobeverages was acquired by PT

Indofood Asahi Sukses Beverage/IASB and PT Asahi Indofood Beverage Makmur/AIBM (a joint venture
between Indofood CBP-Asahi Breweries) in a transaction worth US$ 30 million, [31] so this company
changed its name to PT Prima Cahaya Indobeverages. Then on June 29 2018, the company was merged
with PT IASB and PT Buana Distrindo into PT AIBM, after the release of Asahi's shares.[32] This made
the production of Pepsi, 7 Up, Mirinda and other products shift to PT Anugerah Indofood Barokah
Makmur (AIBM's new name). However, over time it appears that the marketing of PepsiCo beverage
products in Indonesia is not being taken seriously by Indofood with many disappearing on the market.[33]
Finally, starting October 10 2019, PT Anugerah Indofood Barokah Makmur's contract with PepsiCo
ended so that all beverage products from PepsiCo stopped being sold in Indonesia.[34] Two years later,
Indofood and PepsiCo's collaboration in Indonesia officially ended completely with the divestment of
shares in PepsiCo's subsidiary, Frito-Lay, in PT Indofood Fritolay Makmur, which required PepsiCo not
to trade its snack products in Indonesia within three years. It is suspected that the Indofood-PepsiCo
partnership broke up due to the issue of Indofood's palm oil business which was touched upon by pro-
environmental NGOs in the United States.[35]

It is planned that in the near future Pepsi will be produced again in Indonesia, by PT PepsiCo Indonesia
Foods and Beverages owned by PepsiCo. The groundbreaking for the Pepsi factory by the new company
took place in Cikarang, Bekasi Regency, West Java on August 30 2023, which was built with capital of
US$ 200 million. The first target is to produce snack products starting in early 2025.[36]

Pepsi in other countries

Currently, it is estimated that Coca-Cola still dominates the cola drink market in various countries, with
the exception of Oman, India, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Quebec,
Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Northern Ontario (Canada).[ 37]

India: Pepsi currently has a 15% market share in India, placing it in fourth place after Sprite and Thums
Up.[38] This brand was first introduced after PepsiCo established a joint venture with Punjab Agro
Industrial Corporation and Voltas India Limited, with a product called Lehar Pepsi until 1991. The non-
PepsiCo shares were then acquired by the US company in 1994.[39]
Russia: One of the first Western products to enter Russia, Pepsi arrived in the country when the Soviet
government signed a trade agreement with PepsiCo, allowing the company to supply its formula to the
Soviet Union while granting the Soviet government a monopoly on the export of Stolichnaya vodka.[40]
[41 ] The entry of Coca-Cola after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1992 was characterized by the view
that Pepsi was the same as the "old" (Soviet) tradition, so that Coca-Cola could gain a significant market
share and be above Pepsi.[42]
Romania: Pepsi appeared in Romania in 1966 with the establishment of a factory in Constan ța. The
presence of Pepsi was the same as in the Soviet Union, with PepsiCo gaining monopoly rights to export
Romanian wine. Currently the product is still quite popular in this country.[43]
Israel: Pepsi entered the Israeli market in 1991; The delay in entering this country's market was due to
Pepsi's concerns about rejection from the Arab world, although the company claims this was more due to
economic factors than political factors
