ALIGNING TEACHING STRATEGIES WITH MELCS TO
ST
DEVELOP 21 CENTURY SKILLS

Learning Action Cell (LAC)

Session Guide
Prepared by:

Education Program Supervisor
Digos City Division
DepEd Region XI

Objectives
At the end of the session, teachers should be able to:
st
1. Identify the desired set of 21 -century skills that the K to 12 program aims to develop in the learners;
st
2. Evaluate learning plans that use strategies to develop 21 century skills.
3. Develop a learning plan with ICT integration.

Key Understandings
st
1. 21 century learners are sometimes called the Generation Z or Alpha learners. They are the children who were born from the mid-1990s to the present. Also
known as net generation, they grew up with highly sophisticated media and various upshots of continuously flourishing technology like cellular phones, PCs, gaming devices,
and the internet (Topscottt, 2009).
2. Learning plan is a lesson plan prepared daily and also called Daily Lesson Log to guide teachers in the delivery of the lesson to ensure that learners are on task
and are guided on what they are expected to accomplish within a specific week (DepEd Memorandum DM-CI-2020-00162).
3. ICT integration is the process of determining where and how technology fits in the teaching and learning scenario. Worldwide research has shown that ICT
integration can lead to improve students’ learning as well as better pedagogical practices (Rosnaini Mahmud and Mohd Arif, 2008).

st
Our topic for today is “Aligning Teaching Strategies with MELCs to Develop 21 Century Skills.” This is adapted from the session titled “PRIMALS + Session 2:
Integrating ICT and Pedagogical Strategies for 21st Century Skills Development” delivered by Dr. Dino A. Danao.
st
This session will lead us to identify the 21 -century skills that teachers must consider in dealing with their learners, especially in this time of pandemic and the possible
strategies that will meet the attainment of the needed competencies.

Introduction
st
Say: This session focuses on establishing on achieving these objectives: Identify the desired set of 21 -century skills that the K to 12 program aims to develop in the learners;
st
evaluate learning plans that use strategies to develop 21 century skills; and develop a learning plan with ICT integration. Since this is still connected with ICT integration,
basically, we will help bridge the digital gap that most teachers have against the skills of their learners through different strategies.
Ask: Can you still remember the 4Cs of the 21st Century Skills?
Call one (1) participant to enumerate these 4Cs. (Expected Response: Communication, Creativity, Collaboration, Critical Thinking)
Activity 1: Where are my learners? (Individual Activity: 5 minutes)
Encourage all participants to think of the groups of learners they currently have.
Ask: How do you assess your group of learners in relation to the 4Cs of the 21st Century skills?
Have all participants open the Mentimeter link: https://www.menti.com/hrfnzhx7i9 or the given QR code and indicate their assessment.
Say: If you are to rate the group of learners you have in each of the 4Cs, are they in the Low group? in Average group? Or in the High
group?
Note to the Facilitator: The Mentimeter activity looks like this.

3
Process the activity by asking the following questions: (Call random participants to share their answers.)
1. What do you feel while doing the activity?
2. What led you to decide on your ratings?
3. Do you think that these 4Cs are still applicable to our groups of learners now? Are these still applicable to our current context in this time of the pandemic?
4. Based on your answers, what kind of teachers should we have to teach our learners?

Say: In the activity we had, we identified how learners are doing in terms of the 4Cs of 21st Century skills. 4Cs are actually the skills needed by our learners in order to

succeed in today's world. These learners are those we sometimes called the Generation Z or Alpha learners. Children who were born from 1980 to 2010 are called
Generation Z learners and those who were born from 2010 to the present belong to Generation Alpha. Sometimes, Generation Z and Alpha are used interchangeably and are
also called the net generation. Children under this generation grew up with highly sophisticated media and various upshots of continuously flourishing technology like cellular
phones, PCs, gaming devices, and the internet.

Activity 2: A Trip Back To Memory Lane (10 minutes)

Say: This time, let's see how much you remember these things. Just press the raise hand
icon which would mean that you remember the things I’m showing. You can also share
any experience you had with these materials.
Show each picture on screen and ask participants randomly if they know each one. Tell
something about each picture.
Compare the ideas they provided in Activities 1 and 2 through asking these questions:
1. Among the materials presented in Activity which of them do you still use
and why?
2. Do teachers still have difficulty in using new technological innovations in
teaching? Why?
3. Learning from the kind of learners that we have nowadays in Activity 1
and the kind of teachers that we have in Activity 2, what is expected from the
FACILITATORS of learning?
Present the result of the study of Salinas, Jr. G. (2015) on teachers’ lives while teaching
Generation Z learners. Try to assess if you are also the same type of teacher revealed in the study.
Say:According to the study, (1) teachers become impatient in dealing with Generation Z learners, (2) the trainings of teachers are not enough to meet the learning styles of
Generation Z learners, (3) Teachers need to cope with their lives to get into the digital platform, (4) teachers’ self-confidence is at risk as they feel sometimes incompetent to
deal with Generation Z learners, and (5) children are technologically inclined and advance-service learning practice should be done in the class.
Say: There are lots of excuses that teachers can create for not engaging in using technology in their classes. Sometimes we just use whatever is available in our classrooms but
fail to realize its effect. Now, let us ask ourselves, will it still be engaging among the learners if we continue using the old strategy? Will the level of learning still be the same if
we incorporate technology? With that, let us see the changing landscape in education.
Discuss the following slides (15 minutes):

Activity 3: Evaluating Learning Plans (15 minutes)
Say: This time, you will be divided into breakout rooms. Each group will be provided with a sample learning plan (Daily Lesson Log) that you have to evaluate. The focus of the
evaluation will be on the strategies being used and your recommendations to improve targeting 21st century skills. Use the provided template for the presentation of output.

Analysis
Process the activity by calling volunteers to answer the following questions:
1. What can you say about the learning plans that you examined?
2. What were the common strategies teachers use in the activity and the recommendations for improvement?
3. What do you need to consider when you plan on using ICT for teaching and learning?

Abstraction
Guide the participants in the things to consider if they want to plan using ICT for teaching and learning in the classroom through these points:
Ask: With the discussions we had, can you now identify things we really need to consider in integrating ICT in our lessons? Share them using the jamboard app with this link
_______________________
Wrap up their ideas, through these inputs:
1. Conduct a thorough analysis of the situation
2. Understand how students learn with ICT
3. Decide on the role you want ICT to play in the activity
4. Identify the opportunities for you to assess children’s competence
5. Reflect on the impact of learning styles in education and the role of ICT within them

Finally, discuss the details of this slide:

Application (30 minutes)

Say: You will again be divided into breakout rooms, the same group which you had earlier.
You are going to finalize the learning plan that you evaluated. Be sure to consider the competencies on the MELC. Present the final output after 30 minutes.

Closing
Say: The best strategy for using ICT in teaching learning is to begin with what you have got. So what do you have now? When will you start learning to use technology in your class?
