LITERATURE STUDY
THERE ARE MULTIPLE METHODS USED TO CLASSIFY HOTELS:
HOTELS ARE CATEGORISED BASED ON THEIR SIZE, LOCATION,
TARGET MARKETS, AND SERVICE LEVELS.

CLASSIFICATION OF HOTELS
1.SIZE
SMALL HOTEL: A hotel is considered small if it has 25 rooms or fewer.
AVERAGE HOTEL: An average hotel is one that has between 26 and 99 rooms.
ABOVE AVERAGE HOTEL: A hotel that has between 100 and 299 rooms.
LARGE HOTEL: A hotel is considered large if it has more than 300 rooms.

2. TARGET MARKETS

B usiness Hotels: The majority of hotel types are business hotels, which are
typically found in business districts or downtown and serve mainly business
travellers. Even though business travellers make up the majority of the hotel
guests, many tour groups, solo travellers, and small conference groups find these
accommodations appealing. Business hotels may provide free local phone calls,
morning coffee, newspapers, breakfast, and other amenities to their guests.

Airport Hotels: These accommodations are usually geared towards business

travellers, airline employees or crews, and passengers with overnight layovers or
cancelled flights. Certain hotels may provide complimentary transportation from
the hotel to the airport.

Suite Hotel: In the hotel industry, these are the newest and fastest-growing hotel
types. These accommodations feature a living area and a private bedroom.
Suite hotels are especially appealing to professionals like accountants, attorneys,
businessmen and executives because they can work and entertain in areas other
than the bedroom.

Extended Stay Hotels: These accommodations resemble suite hotels in certain

ways, although they typically include kitchen facilities in each room. These are the
hotels for extended visitors who wish to stay longer than a week and do not wish
to pay for hotel amenities.

Serviced Apartments: Residential hotels offer guests long-term or long-term lodging. A lease is
typically signed by a guest with the hotel for a minimum of one month and a maximum of one year.
Living rooms, bedrooms, kitchens, private balconies, laundry machines, and kitchen utensils are
typical room configurations. In contrast to traditional hotels, serviced apartments only offer one
housekeeping service per week.
Suite Hotels: In the hotel industry, these are the newest and fastest-growing hotel
types. These accommodations feature a living area and a private bedroom.
Suite hotels are especially appealing to professionals like accountants, attorneys,
businessmen and executives because they can work and entertain in areas other
than the bedroom.

Resort Hotels: Typically, resort accommodations are found in remote locations

away from cities, such as on an island, in the mountains, or in other wild places.
These lodgings feature leisure centres with views, golf, tennis, cruising, skiing, and
swimming. Accommodations at resorts offer memorable and enjoyable guest
experiences that entice guests to return. These lodging establishments are usually
found near major recreational areas, like large lakes or seas, in the mountains, and
away from the bustle of the big city.

3. LEVELS OF SERVICE
World-Class Service:
These are also referred to as extravagance. Top business executives, celebrities in
the entertainment industry, prominent political figures, and affluent clientele are
the main markets that Five Start Inns targets. They provide private dining offices
in addition to upscale restaurants and parlours, valet parking, and attendant
services.
Mid-Range Service:
The majority of travellers are requested to stay at hotels that offer mid-range or,
at the very least, three to four star accommodations. These kind of lodging
establishments lack adequate staffing and provide limited assistance. They also
provide Wi-Fi, in-room entertainment systems, food and drink room management,
professionally attired assistance, and more.

Budget /Limited Services:

Budget hotels cater mainly to travellers on a tight budget who want a room
with the bare minimum of amenities and services for a comfortable stay,
without having to pay extra for pricey services. These hotels offer tidy,
comfortable, safe, and affordable rooms that satisfy the basic needs of their
guests.
Ownership And Affiliation:
independent or single owner Hotels:
These don't share management or ownership with other establishments. An
instance of this would be a hotel run by a family that does not adhere to any
company policies or procedures.
Chain Hotels:
Properties under this type of ownership typically impose minimal
requirements, guidelines, rules, and procedures to limit affiliate activity.
Generally speaking, the stronger the control over an individual's property,
the more centralised the organisation
STANDARDS OF HOTEL CLASSIFICATION

1962. Since then, numerous nations and the IHA (International Hotel Association)

systems in use throughout the world that are based on the WTO Ratin system but
are tailored to meet the needs and requirements of specific nations.

the measurements of the offices and administrations they provide, they contribute

HISTORY

Establishments that provide hospitality to visitors have existed since the time of the
Bible, and their history is inextricably linked to the history of civilizations.

•The Greeks built thermal baths in their villages as places to relax and heal.
• The Romans were the first to develop thermal baths in England, Switzerland, and
the Middle East.
• Caravanserais followed, providing a resting place for caravans travelling along
Middle Eastern routes. The first buildings to regularly provide sanctuary to
travellers during the Middle Ages were monasteries and abbeys.
To help those who were on the move, religious orders constructed hospitals and
inns.
•Although they proliferated, inns did not yet serve food. For use as rest areas and
by government transportation, staging posts were built. They made it easier to
change horses and offered shelter. Afterwards, a great number of havens appeared
for pilgrims and crusaders travelling to the Holyland.
At that point, travelling got riskier and riskier. Around the same period, inns
started to show up throughout most of Europe. A few of them have continued to be
well-known. In China and Mongolia, staging posts for travellers and courier
stations were established circa 1200.

EMBROYONIC DEVELOPMENT OF HOTEL

• In Europe, an early-stage industry began to emerge. Unmistakable signs

promoting their exquisite cuisine were hung outside foundations. Fifty years later,
clubs akin to the English men of honor's clubs began to appear in America.
• The Palace Vendome in Paris during Louis XIV's reign provided the first example
of a multipurpose engineering complex, with traditional facades requiring shops,
offices, condominiums, and moreover accommodations.

• Inns take over the town in the nineteenth century – The mechanical insurgency,
which started in the 1760s, promoted the growth of lodgings across Europe,
England, and America.
• The Holt Hotel in New York City was the first to offer its visitors a lift for their
luggage. The Tremont House in Boston was the first deluxe hotel in a city centre. It
featured inside restrooms, locks on the doors, and a "ala-carte" menu.

INDIAN HISTORY
A caravanserai was a roadside rest area where travelers, known as caravaners,
could rest and recover after a day’s journey. It played a crucial role in facilitating
the movement of people, goods, and information along major trade routes like the
Silk Road, connecting North Africa, Southeast Europe, and Asia. The term
“caravanserai” has various spellings, including caravansary, caravansaray, and
caravansara. It originates from the Persian word “Karwansara,” a combination of
“karwan” (caravan) and “sara” (palace or enclosed courts), with an added archaic
Persian suffix “-yi.” In this context, a “caravan” refers to a group of traders,
pilgrims, or other long-distance travelers.

The Royal Road of the Persian Empire was a significant ancient highway stretching
2,500 kilometers (1,600 miles) from Sardis to Susa. It was well-equipped with royal
stations and impressive caravanserais throughout its length, providing a safe
passage through populated areas. Caravanserais were also built along the Grand
Trunk Road in the Indian subcontinent. In Mughal Bengal, many places were
named after the word “Sarai” (like Mughal Serai, Sarai Alamgir, and Sarai
Rohilla), reflecting their origins as royal residences. These establishments played a
crucial role in facilitating trade and travel in ancient times.
