a. Explain which food mainly provides the energy that the hummingbird uses to fly and
which other serves as a complement.
Hummingbirds obtain energy from the nectar of flowers, but they also eat insects as part of their diet.
b. Identify which molecule in the food is the main source of energy and which are its elements.
Mainly we found glucose which has 6 carbon, 12 hydrogen and 6 oxygen elements, but also we have
sucrose with 12 carbon, 22 hydrogen and 11 oxygen elements, and finally fructose also with 6 carbon,
12 hydrogen and 6 oxygen elements.
c. Explain the digestion process from the time the hummingbird feeds on the flower´s nectar
until it is transformed into the energy required to fly. Include the amount of energy produced
by each molecule.
The hummingbird obtains nectar from flowers through its beak and tongue, and the nectar particles are
carried through the digestive system to be absorbed by cells. Cells synthesize nectar through cellular
respiration, which depends on the structure of the cell, and produce glucose, through a process by
which the molecules are modified and catalyzed by various enzymes. The amount of energy produced is
2 molecules of ATP and two of NADH.
