Rectangular Isolated Footing Design

This document provides an example of designing a rectangular isolated footing given service loads, design loads, allowable soil bearing capacity, and rebar specifications. It first proportions the footing size using equations to ensure the maximum stress is less than the allowable bearing capacity. The footing is sized at 3.00m by 3.5m. It then checks the footing for bending and shear from factored loads and designs the rebar layout and development lengths.

Foundation Engineering Design of Shallow Foundations

EXAMPLE-1
Design a rectangular isolated footing for the data given below.

 Service Load (including self-weight); P = 1700KN, Mx = 107KNm, My = 55KNm

 Design Load; P = 2400KN, Mx = 150KNm, My = 78KNm
 Allowable bearing capacity of the soil is 200KPa
 Take L=1.2B
 Use concrete grade of C30/37 and rebar grade of S-460.
 Available rebar size is Ø20.

SOLUTION
PART-I: PROPORTIONING
 Applied service load: P = 1700KN, Mx = 107KNm, My = 55KNm
 Soil bearing capacity: qall = 200KPa
 Footing is rectangular with: L = 1.2B
1) Footing size from σmax ≤ qall

288B 3  2040B  1038.16  0

Solving the equation by trial and error,

Taking the reasonably largest positive value, B = 2.89m ≈ 2.9m

Round B and L for construction simplicity,

B=2.9m ≈ 3.00m and L = 3.48m ≈ 3.5m
