• In A.D. 80, Emperor
Vespasian’s son, Titus
opened the Colosseum,
officially known as the
Flavian Amphitheater.
• It opened with 100 days of
games, including
gladiatorial combats and
wild animal fights.

• “Roman Peace”, refers to the time period from
27 B.C.E. to 180 A.D. in the Roman Empire.
• This 200-year period saw unprecedented
peace and economic prosperity
• The empire reached its peak in terms of land
area, and an estimated population 70 million
people.
• All parts of the Roman Empire were to obey
the very strict Roman laws.
• For example, bandits who were caught for
robbery, were executed, or forced to fight in
the gladiator shows.

• This period saw many advances


and accomplishments in
engineering and the arts.
• To help maintain their sprawling
empire, the Romans built an
extensive system of roads.
• These durable roads facilitated
the movement of troops and
communication.
• The Romans built aqueducts to
carry water overland to cities
and farms.

• Many of the advances in


architecture and building
relied upon the Romans'
discovery of concrete.
• Concrete made the creation
of huge rounded arches and
domes possible.
• For example, the Pantheon in Construction
from 113–125 AD
Rome, is one of the largest
freestanding domes in the
world to this day.
