LESSON 4

• Chemical Compound a substance made up of two or more different chemical elements combined
in ratio.

· Types of Formulas

Empirical Formula

– also called as simplest formula.

– The empirical formula of a compound gives the simplest ratio of the number of different
atoms present.

Molecular Formula

– molecular formula gives the actual number of each different atom present in a molecule.

– molecular formulas tell you how many atoms of each element are in a compound.

1. Naming Ionic Compounds

· Ionic compounds composed of metal and non-metal elements.

A. Know what makes compound ionic

B. Build the name
C. Recognize and name transition metals

Naming Covalent Compounds

· Covalent compounds composed of two or more non metal elements.

A. Understand a covalent compound

B. Learn the prefixes
1 — mono
2 — di
3 — tri
4 — tetra
5 — penta
6 — hexa
7 — hepta
8 — octa
9 — nona
10 — deca
C. Name Compounds
· Naming the covalent compound from the formula
– have subscripts as prefixes then put suffix to last element.
· don't use mono in first element but can use all ten for second element
Polyatomic Ions
– contains more than one atom.
– when two capitals together in a ion it is polyatomic.
– the names of common polyatomic end in ate.

Naming Ternary Compounds

– Ternary ionic compounds contains three elements.
– same rule of the binary ionic compound: named by stating the cation first, followed by the
anion a substance made up of two or more different chemical elements combined in ratio.
