THE EFFECTS OF INSTRUMENTS ON MEASUREMENTS

MEASUREMENT
- is the process of comparing something with a standard. To carry out
measurements, a “System of Standards” and a “System of Units” should be
defined
SYSTEM OF MEASUREMENTS
- has two variations, the mks (Meter Kilogram Second system) and cgs
(Centimeter Gram Second system) systems
METRIC SYSTEM
- represented by the abbreviation of its three basic units: mks (meter, kilogram,
and second)
ENGLISH (IMPERIAL) SYSTEM
- fps: foot, pound, second
- the fps system considers pound force as a fundamental quantity and its
counterpart in the metric system is mass
- used in the United States of America, Liberia, Myanmar
INTERNATIONAL SYSTEM OF UNITS (SI SYSTEM)
- the modern form of the metric system
- it is a system of units that the General Conference on Weights and Measures
has agreed upon and legally enforced in almost all parts of the world
Physical Quantity Name of Unit Abbreviation
Mass kilogram kg
Length meter m
Time second s
Temperature Kelvin K
Luminous Intensity Candela Cd
Amount of Substance Mole mol
Current Ampere A

FUNDAMENTAL QUANTITIES
GENERAL PHYSICS 1 (AUGUST 11, 2022 – 9:00AM to 10:00AM)

- basic quantities that are independent of one another

- Example: length, mass, time, thermodynamics, electric current
DERIVED QUANTITIES
- combinations of fundamental quantities
- Example: speed, acceleration, work, energy, and etc.
CONVERSION OF UNITS
1kg = 1000g 1m/s = 2.237mi/hr
1km = 1000m 1km/hr = 0.278m/s
1m = 10dm 1mi/s = 5 793 638.400m/h
1L = 0.26 gal (US) 1km/s = 3 600 000 m/h
1 minute = 60 000 ms 1cm/min = 0.600m/hr
1 mile = 1.609km 1 year = 365 days
