Work Instructions for Weatherford Casing Cutters

Recommended BHA for 9-5/8” Casing Cutting:

1. 8” OD Bull Nose w/ 6-5/8” Reg P. (Use Bit if Bull nose not in place) (M/up- 52 kft-lbs)
2. 8-1/4” OD Weatherford A1 M 23 Multi String Cutter. (Sweep set to cut 9-5/8”)
(M/up- 52 kft-lbs for Top sub to cutter body)
3. 8-1/4” or 8-1/2” Non-Rotating Stabilizer 4-1/2” IF P X B (M/up- 28 kft-lbs)
4. 1 or 2 stands Drill Collar.
5. Drill Pipes to surface.

Operating Procedure:

1. Surface test cutter at surface to check knives opening. Once surface test is OK. Drain the string,
close the knives completely inside cutter body, and put 2 rounds of duct tape to secure knives
and avoid opening of same while RIH.
2. RIH to the cutting depths.
NOTE: Choose cutting depth to avoid cutting across collars. Keep a good tally record as per
knives depth.
3. Record the up/down weight of the string without pumps. Set TDS limit to 9 kft-lbs.
4. Rotate the string to recommended RPM (50-70) and record the free rotating torque and the
rotating string weight. Chain the brakes at cutting depth.
5. Kick pumps ON to the GPM, to have a standpipe pressure, 900-1200 psi. Keep the pressure as to
one stable value between this limit.
6. With the increase in pressure, increase in torque might be noticed. Flow is the key and not the
pressure. Do not pump excessive as this might initiate the damage to the nozzles or the
indicator.
7. Cut can be confirmed with any of the below mentioned indications.
a. Surface pressure drop.
b. Loss of high or erratic torque and torque smooths out.
c. Loss of high or erratic torque to free rotating torque
d. Loss of circulation/ Returns in annulus
e. Work string stalls out
f. Casing that is being cut rotates.
g. Work string weight increase.
8. Once any of the indications are found, continue to rotate the string for 3 -5min to smooth out
the cut portion.
9. Turn the pumps off and then the RPM.
10. Pick up the string slowly and carefully. Closely monitor the weight indicator for arms getting
hung in the cut area.
11. Commence to POOH.
12. At surface, check the tool for any wear and the arms to be checked for any damage. Once used,
arms should be avoided to be re-run and new set of arms should be used.
