## RATIONALE

The rationale of this research is based on the following arguments:

- Sign language is a vital and valuable language that can empower and enrich the
lives of deaf and hearing people, as it enables them to communicate, learn, and
interact with each other and with the society.
- Learning sign language is challenging, especially for those who live in remote
areas, where there are limited resources and opportunities to learn sign language.
Moreover, learning sign language is also difficult for hearing people, who want to
communicate with deaf people, such as their family members, friends, teachers, or
colleagues.
- Mobile technology is a promising and potential tool that can facilitate and
enhance the learning of sign language, as it offers the advantages of portability,
affordability, accessibility, and interactivity. Mobile devices, such as
smartphones and tablets, are widely used and owned by people in Indonesia,
including deaf and hearing people.
- Augmented reality is an emerging and exciting technology that can create and
display virtual objects and information on top of the real world, using the camera
and the screen of the mobile device. Augmented reality can provide a realistic and
engaging learning environment, where users can see and interact with sign language
gestures and feedback in a natural and intuitive way.
- Machine learning is an advanced and powerful technology that can learn and
perform complex tasks, such as recognition and evaluation, using the sensors and
the processor of the mobile device. Machine learning can provide a robust and
accurate learning system, where users can receive and provide sign language
gestures and feedback in a fast and reliable way.
