Information Technology Communication

Information – It is a message, knowledge related to anything that need

to pass on or gather.

Communication – Its way of passing or receiving the information or

interaction. This can happen one to one, one to many or many to one.

Technology – It is a medium used to transfer, pass on or receive

information and communicate in either of the three ways mentioned. It has
impacted the way information and knowledge are exchanged and
communication occurs.
Information and communication technologies are combinations of
information, knowledge, tools and platforms which are based on
computers, technologies, and internet and are used to exchange
information and communicate using various technology-based mediums.
. The communication that takes place using these tools and platforms are
broadly termed as Information and communication technology. With the
advancement of science and technologies and its indispensable presence
in our lives it is impossible to imagine life without them.

ICT has transformed the work ethics, the functions of Human Resource,
companies (all sectors) and most importantly the experience of each
individual. It has penetrated every spheres of our lives through smart
phone, smart watch, internet, video call, smart TV including our education.
This pandemic is the testimony to the fact that we cannot live without these
technologies. When the people across the world were locked within the
four walls, its these technologies that came to the rescue of everyone.
People could still do their work sitting at home and still interacting
thousands of miles away. From online shopping to online banking,
everything is now possible with the help of a click – This is ICT in our lives.
It has helped reduce enormous human costs to companies and save
many hours of work time.
EVOLUTION OF COMMUNICATION

EVOLUTION OF INTERNET
Education and methods of receiving education have ever been changing.
Starting from Gurukul system of education in the lap of nature to traditional
classroom to modern e-learning. It is hard to foresee how it will look few
decades from now.

Let’s have a look at how these ancient forms of education have changed
over a period of time through the following pictures.

EDUCATION DURING GURUKUL SYSTEM

TRADITIONAL EDUCATION UNTIL 20TH CENTURY

MODERN EDUCATION – WITH ICT

Education for centuries was believed to be one field where technologies

cannot proliferate but in the last few decades, technologies have proved
to be extremely helpful for both – students and teachers alike. With the
discoveries of education-based technologies, it has become lot easier and
more convenient for teachers to explain a concept and retain their
attention. Many companies are foraying in this field with their knowledge
of technologies and building platforms where students can find everything
that they need.

In fact, this pandemic has brought to light a new topic to debate altogether
raising questions on the existence of schools. Though the importance of
schools will remain intact in everyone’s life, it has for sure given a new
perspective to think about its immortality. Just last one year has
witnessed unprecedented rise in applications-based enterprises coming
out innumerable e-learning platforms for children claiming that their
learning will not be compromised due to closure of schools due to
pandemic. Even schools have switched completely to online mode of
learning for children striving to freeze number of students in their schools.

ICT gives a new dimension to the teaching learning process and creates
and sustains the interests of both alike. This also breaks the monotony of
traditional teaching, which at times becomes burdensome and irrelevant.

It also helps teachers reach out to many students in the classroom who
otherwise would have zoned out because of prolong lectures method of
teaching. As Gardener talks about multiple intelligence theory in which he
stresses to facilitate varied medium of exposures to students in order to
activate their learning process in the classrooms, a judicious blend of
traditional and technology-based teaching methods will only aid to the
learning process of students.

Let’s have a look at some of the merits and demerits of ICT in Education.

MERITS OF ICT IN EDUCATION

➢ Brings new dimension to the teaching-learning process

➢ Supports learning of the students

➢ Does not depend on the physical distance

➢ Can be all time accessible

➢ Can be independent of the facilitator

➢ Easy transfer of knowledge from teacher to students
➢ Activates multiple faculties. Hence helps in higher retention
➢ Diagnosis and testing can be simplified and quick
➢ One access the contents as per convenience
DEMERITS OF ICT IN EDUCATION
➢ Complete dependence on technologies is hazardous to health

➢ Impacts social intelligence – may lead to social isolation

➢ May Reduce human touch, feeling and sensitivity in students

➢ May not be accessible by all – socio-economic factor

➢ May impact inter-personal intelligence due to self-confinement

➢ Will drive away from interaction with nature
➢ May impact physical and emotional health as well
The market is already cluttered with hundreds of teach based
educational start-ups investing heavily in the field. This pandemic has
created a huge market and scope for such start-ups. This is just the
beginning of transformation of educational landscape and therefore it is
going to be extremely difficult to foresee how the future of education
would look like. It is for sure that it will never be what it looked even a
few years back. ICT is going to be indispensable in the filed of education
as it is already in everyone’s life. Education without technologies will be
impossible to imagine. I think everyone will have to change with the
changing times along with educational institutions in order to survive and
be relevant. Darwin’s theory of survival of the fittest will be very much in
play and evident in this case too.
There has been sudden surge in the tech based educational
investment particularly in last one year. Let us have a look at the
investment in the field of educational technologies in the year 2020.

1. Remote Learning

E-learning mobile apps have provided a great advantage in the field of

remote learning. It has not only expanded the area of teaching but in
situations like pandemic or curfews, remote learning has made sure that
education doesn’t stop. Online learning apps have revolutionized the
education sector by providing learning content on the go. You can
download it and even access it without the internet in some mobile
education apps for students.

2. Unlimited Content To Learn

If we take an example of Google Book Store’s library, learning content has

expanded rapidly and positively influenced learners with its mobile app in
education. Engineering, Science, Arts, or Commerce, it doesn’t matter
from which background you belong, you can find a huge variety of learning
content and access it from your smartphone anytime. Moreover, apart
from Google Book Store, there are multiple other platforms where you can
access endless e-books and increase your knowledge.

3. Fun learning

Many mobile education apps exist which have turned learning systems
fun. Now, traditional ways of learning have been replaced with games,
and other learning techniques to make the learning process more
interesting.
We can take Duolingo as an example. Duolingo is one of the top language
learning apps where you can learn many languages for free. It teaches
you through pictures, fun phrases, chatbots, and much more.

4. Personalized Guidance to boost performance

There are apps for education that can track your learning progress and
weaknesses. These apps are capable of giving you personalized learning
plans so that you can boost your performance.

AI supported mobile apps for education can prepare a graph and provide
you customized results specifically focused on each section of the subject.
Moreover, these reports might also include preparation and performance
improvement tips.

6. Globalized Collaboration
The best learning apps are not limited to one target group to teach them.
For example, Khan Academy has multiple syllabuses from all over the
world. These apps related to education can provide you access to different
curriculums from syllabuses of many subjects in various languages.

7. Collaborative Projects and Assignment

Whenever we discuss the benefits of mobile apps in education, it is

important to talk about collaborative projects and assignments. A mobile
app in the education sector has an advantage over its competitors if it
provides the freedom of multiple people working on the same project.
Necessity is the mother of inventions and survival of the fittest are
the two theories responsible for transformation in education and they will
continue to be the driving force for future as well. ICT – Information and
communication technologies are going to be an integral part of only
educational landscape but everything human being desires to accomplish.
As there are two sides of a coin, so is the case with integration of
technologies in education as well. But we must look at the brighter and
positive side of it as it is here to aid both students and teachers alike in
enhancing teaching- learning process and make it more comprehensive,
accessible, fun and user friendly.

It is therefore the responsibility of the caretakers of students and

children to educate them about the proper and judicious use of
technologies for optimum output and overall development of all faculties
keeping physical, mental, and emotional health at the centre.
