## RESEARCH TITLE

**Developing a Mobile Application for Learning Indonesian Sign Language Using

Augmented Reality and Machine Learning**

## BACKGROUND

Sign language is a visual-spatial language that uses hand gestures, facial

expressions, and body movements to communicate with people who are deaf or hard of
hearing. Sign language is not universal, but varies across countries and regions,
depending on the culture and history of the deaf community. In Indonesia, there are
two main types of sign language: Indonesian Sign Language (BISINDO) and Regional
Sign Language (BASINDO). BISINDO is the national sign language that is used by most
deaf people and sign language interpreters in Indonesia, while BASINDO is the local
sign language that is used by some deaf people in certain areas, such as Bali,
Java, and Sumatra.

Learning sign language is important for deaf people, as it enables them to access
education, information, and social interaction. However, learning sign language is
challenging, especially for those who live in remote areas, where there are limited
resources and opportunities to learn sign language. Moreover, learning sign
language is also difficult for hearing people, who want to communicate with deaf
people, such as their family members, friends, teachers, or colleagues. Some of the
challenges that hearing people face when learning sign language are:

- The lack of availability and accessibility of sign language courses and

materials, especially in rural areas.
- The lack of feedback and guidance from sign language experts or native signers,
especially in online or self-learning settings.
- The lack of motivation and engagement, especially when learning sign language
through traditional methods, such as books, videos, or flashcards.

Therefore, there is a need for an innovative and effective solution to facilitate

and enhance the learning of sign language, especially for deaf and hearing people
in Indonesia.
