ABSTRACT

The Coronavirus 2019 has spread like a wildfire. It is affecting the whole

world, the economy and people’s lifestyle. The normal life people has been

living of was taken by this pandemic caused by this deadly virus. And this

time of pandemic, the safety and health of everyone are the top priorities.

This motion-activated alcohol dispenser reduces the exposure to viruses and

bacteria with sensor-driven and contact-less feature. This is what we really

needed. It helps us to lessen the spread of this disease.

Proper hygiene and hand sanitization should be observed necessarily. Since

the opponent is not visible, which is the virus, it is better to limit the contact

with each other. The spread of this virus is not easy to stop but there are ways

to prevent it from spreading.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

The Coronavirus, COVID-19, pandemic is the defining global health

crisis of our time and the greatest challenge we are facing. It merged in Asia

on the year 2019 and spread to the whole world. As days passed by, the

numbers of infected are increasing. And we have now the tragic milestone of

more than two million deaths, and a lot of families are suffering under an

almost intolerable burden of loss.

Every day, people are losing jobs and income. With no way of

knowing when normality will return. It has the potential to create devastating

effects that will leave deep and longstanding scars. Every country needs to

act immediately to prepare, respond, and recover. We must consider ways to

prevent the spreading of the virus.

In relationship with this, this experimental study is based on what

was happening around. This device can contribute to lessen the spread of this

virus in the simplest way. Infrared sensors detect infrared energy that is

emitted by one’s body heat when hands are placed in the proximity of the

sensor, the infrared energy quickly fluctuates. This fluctuation triggers the

pump to activate and dispense the designated amount of alcohol. In this case,

it reduces the exposure to virus with sensor-driven and contact-less feature.

Statement of the Problem

This study focused on constructing the Motion-Activated Alcohol

Dispenser and aimed at helping to slow the spread of virus.

Specifically, it intended to answer the following questions:

1) What existing materials needed in making this device?

2) How did the evaluators assess the quality of the device in terms of:

a) Effectiveness (functionality and usefulness)

b) Construction assembly (material and design)

Hypotheses:

Considering the problems of this study, the following hypotheses were

formulated:

1) The materials for the Motion-Activated Alcohol Dispenser are

available and affordable to buy. The main material is the sensor; it

automatically detects energy when hands are placed in the proximity

of the sensor that triggers the pump to activate the right amount of

alcohol.

2) The evaluators tried it and tested the Effectiveness (functionality and

usefulness) and the Construction assembly (materials and design) of

the device and is assessed as ‘Outstanding’.

Significance of the Study

This device functions to converse the amount of alcohol needed and

to prevent and lessen the spread of infectious and deadly diseases. This

device can be used in house, grocery stores, workplaces and even in small

sari-sari stores.

This device can be used at school, it can be placed in the front gate to

ensure the safety of the people who are entering the school. It ables to deliver

sanitization measures far beyond what a traditional sanitizer can deliver. It

reduces the exposure of virus and bacteria, preventing it to spread.

This device is really needed especially in public places. It is helpful

simply because it removes the risk of unnecessary touch by using motion

sensors instead of a manual to deliver a proper sanitizing solution in one

quick, convenient action. People got the proper hygiene without risking their

own health.

Scope and Delimitation

This study is focused on the construction of Motion-Activated

Alcohol Dispenser to prevent the spread of viruses. It was conducted at

Quimmarayan, Sto. Domingo, Ilocos Sur, Second Quarter SY. 2020-2021

with the supervision of the project adviser. Its main purpose was to observe

the proper hygiene of each people who enters public establishments or

particular places.
Definition of Terms

The following terms used in this study are operationally defined:

 Alcohol. Designed to kill bacteria or virus present on the hands.

 Connector and Power bank. The source of electricity and energy.

 Mini Water Pump. It is designed to pump water outside.

 Ohm’s Resistor. It is used to control the flow of electricity in an electric

circuit.

 TIP Transistor. It is used to control the flow of electricity.

 Wires. It is used to send or receive electricity

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF REALATED LITERATURE AND

STUDIES

Related Literature

The emergence of Novel Coronavirus has created unprecedented

challenges to global public health. Currently, strategies to deal with COVID-

19 are purely supportive and preventative, with the goal of minimizing

transmission. Hand hygiene is a simple and efficient strategy for minimizing

illness transmission in public and clinical settings. Most alcohol-based hand

sanitizers are effective at inactivating enveloped viruses, including

coronaviruses.

A sensor is a device, molecule, machine or subsystem whose purpose

is to detect events or changes in its environment and send information to

other electronics. Sensor converts stimuli such as heat, light, sound and

motion into electrical signals.

Related Studies

According to the study “Wireless Sensor Network Survey” by

Jennifer Yick, a wireless sensor network has important application such as

remote environmental monitoring and target tracking. Thus, has been enabled

by availability, particularly in recent years of sensors that are smaller,

cheaper and intelligent.

1.
In relation with the study “A Temperature Driven Method for

Structural Health Monitoring” by Reilly, John Patrick, Ph. D., it is the

process of equipping or structure with sensors in order to assess the

combination of that system using structural and analytic techniques.

Temperature Driven Structural Health Monitoring considers temperature as a

driving force in monitoring. The sensors help in lessening the exposure to

others or objects that may cause the spread of diseases.

Moreover, the study of Motion-Activated Alcohol Dispenser, for

sanitizing, is also related to the study “An Automated System for Rapid and

Secure Sanitizing” by LaBarge, Ralph S. This sanitization process removes

propriety, sensitive or classified data (virus) for devices. This is used to

protect networks from cyber-attacks or malware removal. This performance

of the automated sanitization system was excellent, with the required to

sanitize servers, routers and switches. The spread of virus is not for human

only, there is also virus that is for devices and needed to prevented from

spreading.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Conclusions

1) The device is called Motion-Activated Alcohol Dispenser; it

was designed to help in preventing the spread of the virus. Its

main material is the sensor, and this material is available

locally. With the sensor-driven and contactless feature, this is

really needed and helpful especially this time of pandemic.

2) The Motion-Activated Alcohol Dispenser was tested and

assessed as “Outstanding” by the evaluators in terms of

Construction Assembly (Design and Materials) and

Effectiveness (Functionality and Usefulness).

Recommendations

Based on the stated conclusion of the study, the followings are

recommended:

1) For further improvement of the device, instead of using a glass

container, use a plastic container so that it will not break easily.

2) Instead of putting the sensor in the container’s lid, put it in the

device’s nozzle or tube for a better sensor detection.

3) Public areas should consider using sensor-driven devices

especially this time of pandemic where viruses are spread

unknowingly.
