Teenage Reptile Experts

Daniel
My interest in reptiles began when I was eight. My best friend got a snake as
a pet, and it fascinated me. If you look at a snake closely, you will see many
amazing colours. A year later, my father brought me my first gecko. Geckos
are lizards. They can be as small as 1.6 cm. Mine’s a big one – Jimmy’s 40 cm
long. Sometimes I take Jimmy to school with me. I think he likes it.

Brendan
I’ve got a collection of small reptiles, including three turtles and three
colourful snakes. My dad’s a university biology professor with a special
interest in reptiles and he gives me advice about how to care for them. My
longest snake is about 55 centimetres long. It looks dangerous, but it’s safe
to hold. In fact, snakes have got a reputation of not being friendly, but if you
are kind to your snake, it will also show you love.

Kyle
According to my friends, keeping reptiles as pets is strange. But reptiles
aren’t more unusual pets than fish or birds. I plan to study about reptiles and
amphibians at university in the future. I’d also like to meet more people with
my hobby, because none of my friends share my interest. I try to help people
understand reptiles by taking my pet snake to school and giving
presentations.

Part 3
Questions 14-18
For each question, choose the correct answer.

Rose Johnson
I was eighteen when I left school and I knew exactly what I wanted to do: become a clown. So I moved
to the city and after some time, started lessons at a clown school. At the same time, I worked as a
waitress.
Five years have passed since I finished my clown classes. At first, I worked as a clown in the city where
I was living. I wasn’t a circus clown but a birthday clown. That’s a clown who goes to children’s
birthday parties and makes sure everyone has a good time. I didn’t earn much money, but I enjoyed my
work a lot. After a year, I decided to move back to the town I came from because I missed my parents
and sisters.
There are no other birthday clowns in my town, so I am very busy. A weekend doesn’t go by without me
having at least a couple of birthday parties to do. During the week, I find myself working most
afternoons. Recently, I’ve become quite well-known in several towns in the area even though I’ve never
advertised myself. I guess personal recommendations by satisfied customers work the best.
When I go to a birthday party, I do magic tricks and make things from balloons. The children love my
balloon dogs and elephants. They are so excited when they see me coming in my orange wig and big red
nose. I think I have one of the best jobs in the world.
