Elements

Elements
► Pure substance that cannot be broken down
into something else.
► It is made up of just one kind of atoms
► e.g carbon element is made up of carbon
atoms only.
► Gold is made of only gold atoms. silver with
silver atoms so these are elements.
Atoms and elements
1. Scientists have given shorthand way of
referring to them.
2. So each element is given its unique
symbol
3. It can be the first letter of English name
e.g O, H, C
4. Sometime it is first letter plus another
letter from its name. e.g He, Ne, Be,
5. Sometimes symbol is taken from name
of element in another language e. Na,
K,
6. First letter is always upper case
Is water an element??

Purity of metals

Elements particularly Metals are not found in nature

in purest form. These are mixed with other metals or
nonmetals.
So to get pure elements , different technique are
used to separate them.

24 carat is pure gold with no other metals. Lower

caratages contain less gold; 18 carat gold contains
75 per cent gold and 25 per cent other metals, often
copper or silver.
CALCULATE PURITY OF
GOLD /SILVER
Divide the karat number by 24
then multiply the result by 100.
So, for example, to find out the gold percentage in your 22 karat
ring, divide 22 by 24, the result is 0.9166, multiply it with 100, so it
equals to 91.66 per cent - that's the purity of your gold.
Silver

The pure silver is 999 part by 1000.

The best silver is sold as sterling silver and consists of
92.5% of the precious metal. So, it would be stamped
as . 925 or just 925.
Silver coins have 90% of the metal.
The silver purity levels generally accepted in Israel
are: 99.9% purity – 999 thousandths and 92.5% purity
– 925 thousandths
