The ESD terminology refers to the propensity of an object (gloves in this case) to transfer a triboelectric
charge from one surface to another. When we measure the ESD properties, we use 100 volts and
measure the current in Ohms that flows from one point to another on the surface of the glove. The
number is given in Ohms/Square.
1. Conductive: carries a charge quickly from one surface to another. These gloves have a low
resistivity. They do not resist the passage of a current. The ESD measurement would be < 10E5
Ohms/Square or < 10E4 Ohms/Cm. The only examples of these gloves sold by Showa Best in the
USA and Central America include:
Showa Conductive AO120 2.0 X 1004 / Conductive
They have copper in the yarn which conducts a charge. Not many of these are sold. The use is
low. Most applications require dissipative products.
2. Antistatic: a material that prevents triboelectric charging.
3. Static Dissipative: slows the transfer of a charge from one surface to another. These gloves resist the
transfer of a charge and would help prevent damage to electronic components. The ESD
measurements would be between > 10E5 Ohms/Square and < 10E12 Ohms/Square. Showa Gloves
that are considered dissipative include numerous styles including all Zorbit styles, all N‐DEX
disposable gloves, all gloves coated with Neoprene or Nitrile or NRL. It would also include Showa Hi‐
Tech gloves:
AO520 2.0e7 (in‐use) dissipative
AO610 2.0e6 (in‐use) dissipative
540 10
3.8e (in‐use) dissipative
541 DPP 3.9e10 (in‐use) dissipative
4. Insulative: material has resistivity of at least 10E12 Ohms/Square (10E11 Ohms/Cm). You will
notice on the attached data that the N‐DEX Free gloves measure in the Insulative range for
surface resistivity, but “in‐use” when worn, they are “dissipative.”

STEX 541 5.25 X 1010 / Dissipative

Where “in‐use” is indicated, the gloves were tested with the CAFÉ electrode and the wrist strap. The
other readings were taken using surface resistivity utilizing ASTM D‐257. We do not test at the higher
voltages of 500 volts listed in standards ASTM F150 and NFPA 99.
