1 Scope
This Specification, together with the Data Sheets, defines the mandatory requirements
for continuous duty synchronous turbine generators. This specification does not cover
diesel generator sets and shipboard marine installations.
2.1 If there are any conflicts between this Specification and associated purchasing,
project or engineering documents, this specification shall take precedence.
For any deviation or exception, an approved Waiver has to be included with the
purchasing documents.
2.2 Any conflicts between this Specification and other Mandatory Saudi Aramco
Engineering Requirements (MSAERs*) or referenced industry standards shall be
identified to the Company or Buyer Representative who will request the
Manager, Consulting Services Department of Saudi Aramco, Dhahran to resolve
the conflict.
* Examples of MSAERs are Saudi Aramco Materials System Specifications
(SAMSSs), Engineering Standards (SAESs) and Standard Drawings (SASDs).
2.3 Direct all requests to deviate from this Specification in writing to the Company or
Buyer Representative, who shall follow internal company waiver procedure.

4 Qualification
The following paragraph numbers refer to IEEE C50.13-2005, “IEEE Standard for
Cylindrical-Rotor 50 Hz and 60 Hz Synchronous Generators Rated 10 MVA and Above,
15 February 2006” which is part of this Specification. The text in each paragraph
below is an addition to IEEE C50.13-2005 unless it is noted as an exception. Paragraph
numbers not appearing in IEEE C50.13-2005 are new paragraphs to be inserted in
numerical order. Paragraph numbers appearing in IEEE C50.13-2005 but not in this
document have not been modified.
When the phrase “unless otherwise specified” is used in this document, it shall be taken
to mean unless otherwise specified by the Saudi Aramco Company Representative or
Saudi Aramco Buyer.

4.1.4 Scope
4.1.5 Starting
4.1.10.2 Generator shall be free from any critical speed up to 15% above the
maximum continuous operating speed (rigid rotor design).
4.1.10.3 The generator design shall be based on a foundation that meets relevant
International Standards.
4.1.10.4 The shaft displacement relative to bearing housing of any critical speed
below Maximum Continuous Speed shall not exceed 1.5 times the
predicted value at the Maximum Continuous Speed.

from any structural resonance within ± 15% of one and two times the
electric line frequency (60 Hz).
The weighted average sound pressure level of the generator shall not
exceed 85 dBA at distance of 1 meter for 4 pole generators and above
and 90 dBA at a distance of 1 meter for 2 pole generators.
Metal temperatures can reach 70°C when exposed to direct solar radiation.
The enclosure painting system shall be suitable for ISO 12944-2 corrosion
category C4. If severe corrosive area or offshore is specified, the
enclosure painting system shall be suitable for corrosion category C5-M.

4.3.2.2.1 If auxiliary cooling fans are used for TEAAC generators, the fan motors
shall meet the following requirements:
(1) Auxiliary cooling fan motors shall meet the requirements of
17-SAMSS-503.
(2) More than one fan shall be used. Fan motors shall be easily
accessible for maintenance.
(3) The heat exchanger design shall be such that the main generator
meets all load and temperature rise requirements with any one of
the auxiliary cooling fans out of service.
4.3.2.2.3 For TEWAC and Hydrogen cooled generators, more than one water heat
exchanger should be used. The heat exchanger design shall be such that
the main generator meets all load and temperature rise requirements with
any one of the exchangers out of service.
5.2 Capabilities
The generator shall not be the limiting factor throughout the ranges of
operation while maintaining a maximum temperature rise of Class B as
per paragraph 6.2.1.

8. Efficiency
9. Tests
9.1 The tests shall be in accordance of IEEE std 115 or IEC 60034 part 2 and
part 4.
9.1.1.1 The polarization index as per IEEE 43 shall be part of the required
manufacturing proof tests.
9.1.1.2 Stator core test as per IEEE 56 shall be part of the required
manufacturing proof tests.
9.1.1.3 Power factor tip-up (tan-delta) test as per IEEE 286 or IEC 60894 shall
be part of the required manufacturing proof tests.
9.1.1.3.2 If the tip-up, when measured at 100% and 25% of rated line-to-ground
voltage, exceeds 3% for any phase, a five years stator rewind warranty
shall be provided. However, if the tip-up exceeds 5%, this shall be
reviewed and approved by the Company or Buyer Representative with
the concurrence of the Motors and Generators Standards Committee
Chairman.
9.1.1.4 Corona test shall be part of the required manufacturing proof test.
9.1.1.5 Partial discharge test shall be part of the required manufacturing proof
test.

9.1.1.6 For Hydrogen cooled generators, the static pressure test as specified in
paragraph 4.2.8.1 shall be part of the required manufacturing proof test.
9.1.2.2 The polarization index as per IEEE 43 shall be part of the recommended
site tests.
9.1.3.1 Measurement of no-load current for each phase and exciter field current
test shall be part of the special performance test.
9.1.3.2 The noise test in accordance to ISO 3746 - 1995 shall be part of the
special performance test.
9.1.3.4 Bearing temperature rise shall be part of the special performance test.

9.1.3.5 The heat run test shall be done using the zero-power-factor or the
synchronous feedback methods.
9.1.3.5.1 If the heat run test as per 9.1.3.5 is not possible due to the size of the
generator, the temperature rises can be calculated from the open-circuit
and short-circuit tests. Also, the vendor shall submit complete details of
another test to allow measurement of the vibration for at least 4 hours
while the machine is running at full speed.
9.1.3.6 The exciter heat run test shall be part of the special performance test.
A certificate of a similar design is acceptable.
9.1.3.7 Test for the construction of the no-load V-curve shall be part of the
special performance tests.
If the rotor cannot be safely kept at 120% of rated speed for 2 minutes,
the justification shall be reviewed and approved by the Company or
Buyer Representative with the concurrence of the Coordinator, Electrical

10. Marking
10.1 Nameplate
10.1.1 Nameplates and rotation arrows shall be AISI 316 or equivalent stainless
steel with 2 mm minimum thickness.
10.1.2 All writing shall be indelibly marked in English with raised metal
lettering, engraving or stamping.
10.5 Each major component of the generator shall be identified with the
generator serial number, which may be stamped on a nameplate affixed
to the component or stamped directly on the component itself.
The instruction manual shall indicate where these markings can be
found. The following major components shall be identified:
a. Stator frame
b. Stator core pack (if removable)
c. Rotor

13.3 If, during the warranty period, while operating at the conditions specified
on the Data Sheet, the generator fails to meet the specified performance,

14.1 Space heaters shall be supplied for all Air Cooled generators.
14.2 An engraved nameplate shall be located near the space heater terminal
block which shows the space heater operating single phase voltage.
15.3.4 The generator shall be capable to switch between the two modes of
operation specified in 15.3.2 and 15.3.3.

15.3.6 The automatic voltage regulator shall use three-phase sensing and shall
be a temperature-compensated, solid-state design.
15.3.8 The excitation system nominal response, as defined by IEEE 421.1, shall
be 0.50 second.
15.3.9 The rectifier assembly shall have sufficient redundancy to allow for
diode failure without compromising the required generator availability.
15.3.14 Manual synchronizing with bus and line voltmeters, frequency meters,
synchroscope, synchronizing lights, and synchronizing supervisory relay
shall be provided.
15.3.16 A system shall be provided to monitor the shaft voltage relative to the
generator bearings for 2 pole machines. The excitation system output
shall be designed to minimize the voltage induced in the shaft and the
output current spikes.

15.4.1 The control system shall include metering and equipment to monitor
generator frequency, voltage, current, watts, vars, kWh, speed of turbine,
temperatures, vibration, and pressures.
15.4.2 A system shall be provided to monitor and display the temperature of the
generator rotor. The system shall alarm high temperature. The system
shall be supplied with the generator.
15.4.3.2 The generator vendor shall furnish all control equipment, meters, relays,
or similar devices not specifically listed, but that are required for the
operation of the unit from the local control cabinet.
16.2 The terminal box shall be capable of withstanding the faults and short-
circuits described in IEEE C50.13.

16.3 Terminal boxes for accessory leads shall be located on the side of the
machine opposite the main terminal box, unless otherwise specified.
Accessory leads shall terminate on terminal blocks.
Exception:
Terminal boxes for terminal leads for current and potential transformers
located in the main terminal box are not required to be on the opposite
side of the motor from the main terminal box. These PT and CT leads
are permitted to terminate in the main terminal box provided that they are
separated from the power leads by a suitable physical barrier and that
they can be accessed with the cover or door for the main terminal leads
in place. (i.e., A separate door or cover provides access to the CT and
PT terminal section). CT leads shall terminate on shorting terminal
blocks suitable for CT terminations. Main terminal box heater leads may
be terminated on the same side as the main terminal box.
17.3 The high resistance grounding system shall consist of a low-ohmic value
resistor connected to the secondary of a distribution transformer with the
primary winding of the transformer connected from the generator neutral
to ground.
17.4 Current through the primary of the grounding transformer for a single
phase to ground fault shall be limited to between 5 and 15 amperes

17.5 Six armature leads shall be brought out for application of differential and
other relaying protection.
18.4 In the probe area, the combined electrical and mechanical runout shall be
25% of the allowable vibration as specified in 4.1.10.

21. Inspection
21.1 The vendor shall keep the below data available for a minimum of 5 years
for the use of Saudi Aramco:
Certification of materials such as mill test, reports on shafts, forging
and major castings.
Final assembly and running clearance data such as air gap, bearing
and seal clearances.
21.3 The oil system furnished shall meet the cleanliness requirements of
API STD 614.
