PROPOSITION, RULES ON

A formal debate comprises of AFFIRMATIVE, NEGATIVE, REBUTTAL and the


PROPOSITION.

The subject matter proposition is an interesting matter, debatable and that which the
debater must have a general knowledge of.

In writing the proposition, the matter should be so narrowed as to embody only one central
idea. It must be stated in the affirmative and it should not contain ambiguous words. The
proposition should be worded as briefly and simply.

Example:
Resolved: That use of marijuana be legalized in the Philippines.
Resolved: That divorce be legalized in the Philippines.

Your exercises:

1. Write out three propositions in accordance with the rules aforementioned. The
subject-matter of these propositions should be purely local in character and
matters concerning the Philippines, your locality, your vocation, etc.
(you should not have the same answers)

2. Apply the appropriate rules to each of the following propositions and point out
where each is defective.

Resolved, that –
a. We derive more pleasure from money than love.
b. Intelligence and wisdom are the same.
c. Education should be compulsory.
d. Lawyers are more important than doctors.
e. The government should impose death penalty to corrupt leaders.
