1. What is the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and why is it important?
Answer : UNCLOS is one of the most comprehensive instrument and legal framework
in international law because it is covers fishing and shipping pollution and
conservation piracy and maritime borders regulation , often called a constitution for
the seas. It plays a vital role in our work for sustainable development and peace.
2. What is the significance of the traditional fishing practice of the Kerkennah
community?
Answer : the traditional fishing practice of Kerkennah community is arriving at the
same spot, stopped by the area which has palm tree leaves, called shaffir. It is the
traditional way fishing yet a safest way to do and does not harm the sea. They are
relying on natural’s resources as well as their knowledge of tides. They also developed
an intricate system for catching fish recently.
3. What are the issues surrounding fisheries in Tunisia?
Answer : the Kakkernah fisherman are struggling with declining catches and income.
Saffire is going to vanish and there is not enough fish to catch. The fish are getting
scarce and smaller. It is caused by marine pollution. Rapid industrialization near port
and untreated water are also damaging the habitats. The increasing number of
motorized fishing boats like bottom trawling. The nets damaged the seagrass and catch
all of the things. The seagrass itself needs take time at least 15 years to regenerate.
Everyone is working violently towards the sea. Climate changes issues and wind called
schmuk makes the fish brought from far away. It also caused erratic weather, declining
fisheries, degraded habitats, and coastal erosion.
4. What measures that need to be taken to resolve the marine environmental problems in
the Gulf of Gabes/ Tunisia?
Answer :
a. limiting the marine pollution
b. limiting the trawling fishing by dropping thousand cement blocks
c. passed a regulation limiting fishing marine protecting area called period biological
rest and bringing the young marine reach the maturity and be able to reproduce
d. get a compensation for financial losses
Above those solution we still need additional effort and another cooperation due to
getting back the normal era and gives Kerkennah fisherman an appropriate way of life.
