Record of initial ideas

To be completed by the candidate

This page records initial meeting(s) with your supervisor to agree your project ideas. Additional pages can be
submitted if more than one idea has been explored.

My idea(s) for topic/title

How significant has science been in affecting Christian beliefs over history?
To what extent has science affected Christianity over history?
To what extent has Christianity influenced scientific theories?
All of these titles are quite similar but the main topic I want to research on about is science and Christianity.
My ideas for research and development of my project
I am interested in this topic because I wanted it to relate to something quite
relevant yet intriguing that we have touched upon in PRS lessons in school. Science was one of the first things
that came to my mind as I don’t fully understand some things to do with science but I wanted to discover more
about them. Then, I picked Christianity because I wanted to learn more about a religion other than Hinduism (my
religion) which was prominent in the world’s population. Christianity was the main religion which caught my sight
initially as again I haven’t learnt entirely about Christian beliefs and is something that I wanted to learn more
about. The way I will research my topic will be reading through credible academic articles specifically relating to
science and Christianity such as: God and nature: historical essays on the encounter between Christianity and
science which was written by DC Lindberg in 1986. Another credible source/article that I am planning on using is
called Christianity in Science and was written by Dean Inge in 1928. In addition, I am planning to going to local
libraries in order to use historic books relating to Science and Christianity. This way, I will be using not only the
web to find articles but actual physical copies of books to compare what they both say about the effect of science
on Christianity. Other ways I could collect information is possibly contacting priests, scientists or even regular
Christians on their views of Christianity involved in scientific beliefs but will quite challenging to find Christian
priests especially.
My summary of the comments and advice from my supervisor
My supervisor gave me some advice and commented on my initial ideas. They said it was overall pretty well
written but some improvements I should make are that I should focus on only one question rather than stating
three questions which I did. In addition, I should check the reliability of my sources even further, just to make sure
that they are suitable and credible sources to use for my question and research.
Other than these potential improvements, my supervisor mainly gave positive feedback.

Modifications I have made as a result of my discussion with my supervisor

I think that "To what extent has Christianity influenced scientific theories?" is a good question. This will be the
question that I will be focusing on but I will research potential sub questions relating to my main question. I will
also research some scientific theories affected by Christianity as it directly relates to my question.
The sources that I am planning to use in my research are credible and reliable. For example, one of the sources
that I'm planning to use God and nature: historical essays on the encounter between Christianity in Science was
written by DC Lindberg in 1986. DC Lindberg was an American historian of science who studied about the
relationship between science and religion. He has written or edited many books about this field of work and has
achieved numerous awards for his efforts.

 the courses of study or area(s) of personal interest to which the topic relates
The study of the role of religion in science, more specifically, the influence of Christian beliefs in science.
Currently, it is the stage of my life where I am doing the GCSE syllabus of numerous subjects which includes 3
sciences. This can get quite tiresome but learning more about the background of scientific theories that relate to
what I am learning currently and which I find quite fascinating yet unique, will hopefully make it more interesting
for me to learn about, keep me involved in science and gives me a different perspective on religion and science. I
also want to investigate more about the relationship between religion and science i.e. whether there are any
conflicts or arguments created by the expansion of both aspects: Religion - Christianity specifically in this case -
and science.
 my intended product
To research and learn about my chosen title through online articles, books, videos and experts in this field,
whether they may be in person (i.e. Science teachers or Christian priests with the knowledge of this topic) or
experts that have written books and/or arcticles about it. In addition to this, I intend to write a 2,000 word essay
about the influence of Christianity and religion over science and their theories. Lastly, I hope to learn more about
the background of some scientific theories related to relgion, keeping me interested in the subject and expand my
comprehension of this topic and science subject in different ways which I was not aware of before, hopefully
increasing my success as well.

Outline the next steps in my project

My first steps in planning, researching and deadlines that I will set myself
I have started to read some sources related to the influence that Christianity has had on Scientifc theories and
there are many more sources that I will read to expand my knowledge of this topic .Some of the sources that I
read or have gathered that I will read, so far are Youtube videos on this topic by experts in this field, JSTOR
academic arcticles, specialised website articles and books or essays written by experts in this field. I plan to finish
reading all of my secondary sources by the time I plan to start writing my first draft of the HPQ which is by the
week commening 15th November (as shown on my Gantt Chart). Finishing utilising all of my secondart sources at
this time, will give me sufficient time to commence writing my draft, with good knowledge and evidence that I
learnt about in these sources also giving me a greater understanding of what I should write and giving me different
perspectives of what others think, which I plan to definitely include in my draft essay and actual essay. I plan to
finish my research log of all my sources at a similar time to when I start to write my initial draft of the essay, i.e.
the week commencing 15th November. The research log will track all of the sources I have read and will include
the main contents of the source, will state which ones were useful to my title and which ones weren't in order to
aid me in referencing to the source's contents and evidence while also helping me decide what evidence or
sources I will use in my essay. However, I will not fully halt my research before my initial draft of the essay; I plan
to carry on noting down any resources that I come across throughout the process of writing the main essay, if I
feel that I will require more sources to aid my research. Therefore, my research may carry on till the end of
November, more specifically, the week commencing 29th of November, where I plan to commence my main essay.
Finally, I have altered my title, based on my supervisor's comments, to ensure that it is not too broad so is more
feasible to write about by including a timescale. My new title is: "To what extent has Christianity affected scientific
theories over the past millenium?"
My summary of the comments and advice from my supervisor
Overall, my supervisor was very pleased with my initial steps in planning, researching and the deadlines I set
myself. This was mainly due the fact I gave clear actions and specific date by referring to my detailed Gantt Chart
as mentioned by my supervisor. However, my supervisor's target for my improvement was for me to give the
specific references of sources I have already read and sources that I intend to read in the future using the Harvard
referencing system.
