Question 1- The vibration lifetime of CO molecules isolated in a Ne matrix at 6K is ~6 ms.

Calculate the natural linewidth of this vibration in cm-1. Why are linewidths observed in IR
spectroscopy for this stretch larger?

Δv = ½*pi*cz
= ½*pi*(2.998x10^8)(6x10^-3)
=8.85x10^10 cm-1
Other factors which affect line widths
I) Intrinsic pressure, Doppler broadening
II) Noise in the detection system- white, pink & environmental noise

IR spectrometers are also enlarged with large experimental steps

Δv= 4 cm-1, so that rotational lines (Δv ~ 2cm-1) or arranged out. This is to make the
spectra easier to analyze.

Question 2- A circuit with a resistance of 300 kΩ is the input of an amplifier whose

bandwidth is 105 Hz. What is the contribution of the circuit/amplifier to the rms noise
voltage? What is the lowest voltage that can be detected using this set-up?

R= 300 k Ω

ΔF= 10^5 Hz

Assume room temperature T=298 K

Resistor contributes thermal noise:

VRMS = (4RKTΔF)^1/2

= (4(300x10^3)(1.381x10^-23)298x10^5)^1/2

= 2.22x 10^-5 V (3SF)

= 22.2 µV (3SF)

For the signal to be detected s/n = 2 or 3

If s/n =2 Smin= 2(22.2 ) µV=44.4 µV (3SF)

If s/n =3 Smin= 3(22.2 ) µV=66.7 µV (3SF)

In calculations need to take extra digit- Here 1/100 THs place
