AIR
CONDITIONER
FAILURE MODES AND EFFECTS ANALYSIS (FMEA)
FIRST STEP
IDENTIFY FAILURE
MODES

Insufficient Cooling Electrical Failure Drainage Issues

Potential Causes: Potential Causes: Potential Causes:
- Refrigerant leak - Power surge - Clogged
- Compressor - Faulty wiring condensate drain
failure - Overheating - Improper
- Blocked air filter components installation
Potential Effects: Potential Effects: Potential Effects:
- Uncomfortable - Air - Water leakage
indoor temperature conditioner - Mold and
- Reduced shutdown mildew growth
efficiency - Risk of - Component
- Increased energy electrical fire corrosion
consumption - Loss of cooling
STEP 2: ASSESS
SEVERITY, OCCURRENCE,
AND DETECTION
For each failure mode, assign a
severity rating, an occurrence
rating, and a detection rating
on a scale of 1 to 10 (with 10
being the most severe, most
likely to occur, or least
detectable). These ratings are

20%
used to calculate the Risk
Priority Number (RPN).
STEP 3: CALCULATE
RPN

RPN = Severity × Occurrence × Detection

STEP 4: PRIORITIZE
FAILURE MODES
List failure modes in descending order
of RPN. Higher RPN values indicate
higher priority for addressing the failure
mode.
STEP 5: DEVELOP
MITIGATION ACTIONS

Insufficient Cooling (High Priority)

01 - Action: Regular maintenance checks to detect and repair refrigerant leaks, clean air filters,
and monitor compressor health.
- Responsible: Maintenance Team
- Target Completion Date: Ongoing

Electrical Failure (Medium Priority)

02 - Action: Install surge protectors, ensure proper wiring, and monitor component temperature.
- Responsible: Electrical and Maintenance Teams
- Target Completion Date: Within 3 months

03 Drainage Issues (Low Priority)

- Action: Regularly inspect and clean condensate drains during maintenance checks.
- Responsible: Maintenance Team
- Target Completion Date: Ongoing
Step 6: Implement Mitigation Actions
Carry out the mitigation actions as planned.

STEP 7: REASSESS RPN

After implementing mitigation actions, reassess the RPN for each
failure mode to ensure the risk has been reduced to an acceptable
level.
STEP 8: MONITOR AND REVIEW

Continuously monitor the air conditioner's performance,

conduct regular maintenance, and review the FMEA periodically
to identify new risks and improve the system's reliability.
