Importance of Chemistry in Everyday Life

OBJECTIVES: To identify the importance of chemistry in our everyday life

MATERIALS: Printed laboratory activity

INSTRUCTIONS: Research the importance of chemistry in our everyday life

QUESTIONS:

A. Importance of Chemistry in Food

Pick five from the images below then explain its importance to the foods that we
intake.

1. Gluten- is a protein naturally found in some grains including wheat, barley, and rye. It acts like a
binder, holding food together and adding a "stretchy" quality- think of a pizza maker tossing and
stretching out a ball of dough. Whitout gluten, the dough would rip eadily.

2. Almond flour- is rich in vitamin E and other antioxidants, which help reduce the risk of serious health
conditions like cancer, diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. It is also an excellent source of: Manganese.
Magnesium.

3. Corn flour- in addition to providing more fiber and protein, corn flour contains B vitamins, iron,
potassium, magnesium, and several other nutrients
4. Tapioca- can provide important health benefits. For example, calcium is important for keeping your
bones strong and preventing the development of osteoporosis.

5. Apple Cider Vinegar- several studies in animals and humans have found that acetic acid and apple
cider vinegar may promote fat burning and weight loss, decrease blood sugar levels, increase insulin
sensitivity, and improve cholesterol

B. Importance of Chemistry in Medicine State the used of the following drugs to human

1. Analgesics- also called painkillers, are medications that relieve different types of pain from headaches
to injuries to arthritis.

Examples include:

- Acetaminophen

- Aspirin -COX inhibitors

- Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen and naproxen

2. Antiseptics- in dermatologic surgery commonly include chlorhexidine, providone-iodine,

chloroxylenol, isopropyl alcohol, hexachlorophene, benzalkonium chloride, and hydrogen peroxide.

3. Disinfectant- refers to using chemicals to kill germs on surfaces. Disinfecting does not necessarily
clean dirty surfaces or remove germs, but killing germs that remain on a surface after cleaning,
disinfecting can further lower the risk of spreading infection.

4. Antibiotics- are powerful medications that treat certain infections and can save lives when used
properly. They either stop bacteria from reproducing or destroy them. Before bacteria can multiply and
cause symptoms, the immune system can typically kill them
5. Antacids- are amedicine used to treat heartburn and indigestion. You can get antacids over the
counter without a prescription. Antacids work quickly to reduce the amount of acid in your stomach to
relieve symptoms. Antacids don't treat the underlying causes of heartburn and indigestion.

C. Impotance of Chemistry in Cosmetics

Enumerate cosmetic products that you used everyday.

For Men
For Women
1. Sunscreen for body Toner
2. Cleanser Serum
3. Toner Eye Cream
4. Moisturizer SPF Sunscreen
5. Moisturizer with Retinol for nighttime Cleanse

D. Importance of Chemistry in Soaps and Detergents

Soap and Detergent

1. Cold Process Soap- Glycerin is responsible for the creamy and smooth texture that allows the
nutrients to penetrate deep into the skin. This process creates a bar that leaves the skin feeling fresh
and clean.

2. Castile Soap- can be effectively used for cleansing the body and hair, but can also be used as an
all-purpose cleanser for household cleaning, washing clothing, and cleansing makeup brushes and
sponges,"says Dobos". That being said, castile soap needs to be diluted prior to use since it is very

3. Dishwashing Liquid- is used primarily for removing food from used dishes and tableware. Heavy
soil is generally scraped from the dishes before using. Detergent formula can vary based on use.

4. Anionic Detergents- are commonly found in laundry detergents, handwashes, ketchen cleaners,
body washes. They are most widely used and versatile surfactants. They are the most effective at
removing oily residue.

5. Body Wash- the primary function of body wash is to cleanse your skin of impurities like oil, dirt,
makeup, and sweat. Body wash is similar to bar soap and shower gel in that it creates lather and rids
the body of dirt, but many differences set the three options apart.

E. Importance of Chemistry in Textiles

Cut a piece of textile, and then attach it below.

1.Wool Source: Sheep

Typically used in: wool has been used for blankets, horse rugs, saddle cloths, carpeting, insulation
and uohostery.

2. Cotton Source: Plant

Typically used in: to make clothes and homewares, and industrial products like tarpaulins, tents,
hotel sheets, army uniforms, and even astronauts clothing choices when inside a space shuttle.
3. Polyester Source: Petroleum product
Typically used in: manufacture of many home furnishing materials such as bedsheets, curtains,
blankets, and pillowcase. Also used in upholstered furniture.

4. Nylon Source: Crude oil

Typically used in: It is used to make fishnet.

5. Silk Source: Domestic silk moth

Typically used in: used for making comforters and sleeping bag

F. Importance of Chemistry in Fuel

FUEL

Petrol- Hydrocarbons, Volatility, Impurities, Fuel microbes, Octane, Volatility, Flammability.

Diesel- Cetane number(or cetane index), fuel valatility, density, viscosity, cold behavior, and sulfur
content.

LPG- Obtained during the processing of crude oil, or direct from the North Sea. Colourless and
odourless. Half as heavy as water when liquid form. Easily liquefied by pressure, taking up only
around 1/250th of its gaseous volume. Either commercial butane or commercial propane.

Kerosene- in general, kerosene is used as jet fuel and as fuel for domestic burners and furnaces.

CNG- is less likely to ignite on hot surfaces, since it has a high auto-ignition temperature. and a
narrow range of flammability. CNG powered vehicles are considered to be safer than petrol-
powered vehicles
