CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

Nature and Importance of the Study

ICT, or information and communication technology, encompasses resources

and applications that handle and communicate data. Cellular phones and televisions

are two of the most prominent instances of ICT. (Virmani, 2022)

Moreover, ICTs are extremely beneficial in the development of awareness.

Some of the most notable skills that students develop as a result of their use of ICT

include having the capacity to search for and compare various sources, as well as the

ability to structure information. However, there are further benefits:

• Their interest in learning grows as a result of the use of resources such as videos,

websites, graphics, and games, which make traditional subjects more appealing.

Multimedia content is an extremely useful tool for bringing various subjects to

students in a comprehensive and entertaining manner.

• Interactivity: the use of ICT in the classroom fosters an active and participatory

attitude among students, who are involved in learning and are positioned as the

protagonist.

ICT (information and communication technology) has significantly changed

how we learn and live in the modern world. It has made education more engaging and

accessible in a variety of ways.

However, just like any other tool, ICT has some drawbacks. In this article, we will

look at the negative effects of ICT on education, including how they affect students,

teachers, and the entire learning process.

• Disturbing Factors in the Classroom: Because smartphones, tablets, and laptops are

so common, students are increasingly tempted to use them for non-educational

purposes during class. Because

they are distracted from the lesson by social media, texting apps, and online games,

their academic performance may suffer.

• Health-related issues: An excessive amount of screen time can lead to eye strain,

headaches, and disrupted sleep patterns, among other health issues. Long-term use of

ICT devices may have a negative impact on students' physical and mental health.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of ICT usage on

students, particularly those who are suffering with their studies, notably in editing and

preparing presentations, and to highlight the benefits of ICT usage in improving their

academic performance.
This study demonstrates the assistance of ICT for teachers to get the global

requirement to replace traditional teaching methods with technology-based teaching

and learning tools and facilities. This study aims to analyze teachers’ perceptions of

the effectiveness of ICT integration to support the teaching and learning process in the

classroom. The results indicate that ICT integration has great effectiveness for both

teachers and students. Findings indicate

The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of ICT usage on

students, particularly those who are suffering with their studies, notably in editing and

preparing presentations, and to highlight the benefits of ICT usage in improving their

academic performance.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES

The general objective of this study is to understand the influence of

Information Communication Technology on academic performance of selected ICT

students in Tubod National High School, ICT allows schools to use advanced

technology and equipment in classrooms to give students a better learning experience.

These schools use gadgets such as laptops, teaching screens, and projectors to add a

visual effect to learning. ICT is a valuable research instrument that facilitates the

production of additional theses, journals, publications, and dissertations by

accelerating the research process. It facilitates a greater input of knowledge within the

research community. Most importantly, it raises the caliber of research projects. The

findings of this study will be able to state on how ICT usage impacts the academic

performance of students under Information Communication Technology strand.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
The specific objectives of the research are as follows:

 To determine the impact of ICT usage on academic performance of students;

 To identify factors affecting the usage of ICT; and

 To come up with recommendations that can be used to the selected population.

SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY

This study focuses on the impact of information and communications

technology (ICT) usage on academic performance of selected ICT students in Tubod

National High School. The data collection will be conducted to 20% of the total

population in grade 11 and grade 12 of Tubod National High School.

This study looks into how students use information and communication

technology (ICT) as a resource to improve their skills and academic performance.

Technology should be used for more than just supplementary purposes to traditional

teaching methods (Tezci,2011a). According to Tezci (2011), teachers should learn not

only how to use technology to enhance traditional teaching or increase productivity,

but also how ICT can be integrated into classroom activities to promote student

learning from a student-centered perspective.

TIME AND PLACE OF THE STUDY

The Senior High Building at Tubod National High School in Tubod, Surigao

del Norte is where the research will be carried out. Selected senior high school

students are the subject of the study in an attempt to provide insights into the impact

of ICT usage to ICT students in Tubod National High School. Furthermore, Tubod

National High School has been identified as the research setting for the study. There

are no students from other educational establishments or schools included. By

focusing on a single school, the study aims to provide a localized understanding of the

influence that ICT use has on senior high students' work performance within this

particular environment. The study will be carried out throughout the school year

2023–2024.

FRAMEWORK OF THE STUDY

Academic performance refers to the improvement of students' current state of

knowledge and skills, as reflected in their GPA, as well as the development of their

personality and academic growth from lower levels of study to higher levels of study.

The purpose of researching academic performance in the context of ICT adoption is to

demonstrate the existence of a significant relationship between the two variables.

This study is based on data collected from four Saudi universities, two of

which, King Abdulaziz University (KAU) and Damam University (DU), have fully

implemented ICT in their educational processes, while the other two, Northern Border

University (NBU) and Baha University (BAU), are in the process of doing so. The

rationale for selecting these universities, which differ in size, geographical location,

number of students, number of courses, and IT adoption, is to create a comprehensive

research model with the ability to generalize its findings. Numerous studies have been

conducted to investigate the relationship between ICT and student performance;

however, these studies have been unable to determine the precise impact of ICT on

student performance. These studies have presented two major challenges: first, it is

difficult to determine student performance because the common approach used by

many researchers holds the curriculum accountable for grade achievement. However,

Ali et al. and Rose and Kadvekar criticize these studies, accusing them of taking a

narrow approach and proposing an alternative approach that takes-into account the
influence of ICT on students' attitude, competency, and skills in addition to

curriculum. According to the authors, this approach has been promoted as a more

comprehensive approach capable of when compared to the narrow approach, it

produces more accurate results. However, this broad approach necessitates a more

comprehensive and complex strategy for focusing on and monitoring the labor

market. (Basri et al., 2018)

FIGURE 1: Conceptual framework of the study (Palvia et al., 2018)

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

What is the profile of the participants in terms of:

•Age;

•Sex;

•Educational attainment; and

•Profession?
What would be the possible outcome of this study?

Based on the result of the study, what recommendations may be offered?

HYPOTHESIS

The specific hypothesis based on the above two hypotheses is; Ho: There is

no link between ICT and educational quality.

The alternative hypothesis is H1: There is a significant relationship between

ICT and educational quality. (Janaki & Prof, 2019)

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

It is expected that the findings of this study will demonstrate and justify why

ICT use has such a significant impact on students' academic performance. ICT will

assist students in improving their skills and taking the initiative to create and innovate

some things that will help them improve their academic performance.

Teachers. The demand for digitalization has transformed teaching materials,

emphasizing dynamism and student interaction with the subject matter. The use of

simultaneous presentations, videos, applications, and didactic images improves

teaching by increasing student involvement in the teaching process, as they are the

protagonists rather than the teacher, as stipulated by traditional expository

methodology. (luciaclemares, 2023)

Schools now have new sources of information and resources at their disposal

as a result of information and communication technologies, allowing both students

and teachers to make immediate inquiries. At the same time, they can use

communication channels and interactive applications like chats and forums to

supplement other tools like e-mail, word processors, image editors, and so on.

(luciaclemares, 2023)

Researchers. The findings from this study will furnish them with basic or

advanced knowledge of the subject matter. This will also help them to have more

knowledge about ICT usage.

Community fostering not only a vibrant social mix, but also reducing the need

to leave the house to speak with people in local businesses and neighbors.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This section contains previously conducted studies, papers, and other

material from published journal and online that are linked to the subject at hand.

INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

This phrase refers to the numerous components of computers, networks (including the

Internet), software, and other settings that serve as a resource for instructors and

students by facilitating learning and instruction. ICT adoption in education is a

complicated and varied process, with various challenges faced to date in integrating

ICT into classroom operations. (What Is ICT in Education | IGI Global, n.d.)

When instructors are digitally savvy and understand how to integrate ICT into the

curriculum, ICT may have an influence on student learning. To communicate,

generate, transmit, save, and manage information, schools employ a wide range of
ICT technologies. (Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Education |

Unesco IIEP Learning Portal, n.d.)

EFFECTIVENESS OF ICT IN EDUCATION

The study's findings demonstrate how much more effective technology-based

teaching and learning efficient when compared to a regular classroom. This is due to

the utilization of ICT resources and equipment will set up a more engaging and

productive active learning environment for educators as well as learners. Nonetheless,

the majority of educators in this research concur that ICT increase classroom

management because the pupils are more attentive and well-behaved. Additionally,

this study demonstrated that using ICT in lesson plans helps students learn more

efficiently are more captivating and fascinating. The participants consequently

concurred that incorporating ICT can encourage learning in students. (Jadhav et al.,

2022). ICT can be utilized in a variety of ways to assist both instructors and students

in learning about their different fields of study (Rachmawati, 2019).

PROS OF ICT IN EDUCATION

Increased Student Engagement and Participation.

Most notable advantages of ICT training for instructors is improved student

involvement and participation in the classroom. Teachers can employ technology to

create more engaging and dynamic classes that attract students' attention and keep

them interested throughout the class. This can result in increased information
retention and academic achievement for students. Furthermore, technology can enable

students to cooperate and connect with one another, which helps improve their social

and communication skills. Overall, ICT training for instructors can improve students'

learning experiences and help them reach their academic goals. (ICTE Solutions

Australia, 2021)

CONS OF ICT IN EDUCATION

Technology use in the classroom can be a distraction.

Although students appear to be engaged in meaningful tasks, in reality they are

working very inefficiently and are not taking advantage of the potential of ICT. It can

distract you from the intended task without being too noticeable. However, for this

reason, in addition to monitoring the progress of ICT learning, it is also necessary to

monitor the technology used in the classroom. (Pros & Cons of |Technology to Use in

the Classroom|, n.d.)
