Factors That Affect Building Energy Use

We spend a lot of our time in buildings, and they use a lot of energy. Since they are
using energy, we don’t want them to use any more than required to meet your needs

The amount of energy a building uses depends on:

•How the building is used (laboratory, office, classroom, etc)
•The age of the building
•The type of construction
•Mechanical system type (and vintage)
•Recent upgrades and maintenance on the mechanical equipment (especially the
building’s control system)
•Outside air temperatures
•The occupancy of the building
•The insulation of the building
•Window type and shading. orientation
•Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Schedules
•The sophistication of the temperature control system
•Specialty equipment, e.g. lasers, MRI machines, etc.
•The plug loads in the building
