You are on page 1of 1

Dear Professor Patrick,

I hope this email finds you well. My name is Simon Nyarko, and I am writing to express my
strong interest in pursuing a PhD in Public Health at University British Columbia, Canada.

I have been deeply inspired by your research and publications in the area of antimicrobial
resistance and pharmacoepidemiology and believe that your expertise aligns perfectly with my
academic and research aspirations.

I have observed that healthcare services provided in low-resource settings pose a significant
challenge in the current world considering the quality, efficacy, and safety of drugs available.
This challenge is exacerbated by the infiltration of poor-quality and counterfeit drugs along the
pharmaceutical supply chain, in addition to issues related to prescribing practices. This
significantly leads to antimicrobial resistance and low therapeutic outcome.
To combat this head aching crisis, a holistic approach which encompass the integration of
innovative analytical and study design methods is necessary, and I would like to dedicate time to
researching this
My undergraduate background is in Biological Sciences and my MPhil background is in
Pharmaceutics. During my undergraduate studies I conducted research focused on the prevalence
of antibiotic resistance in bacteria isolates obtained from Ghanaian paper currency. This project
involved the isolation and identification of various bacteria strains, as well as conducting
antimicrobial sensitivity tests. My findings underscored the significance of antibiotic resistance
and its implications for public health, which has fueled my passion to contribute to combating
this global challenge.
My master’s thesis focused on assessing the quality of fixed-dose combination artemether-
lumefantrine tablets and suspensions marketed in Kumasi, Ghana. As part of the thesis I
developed and validated a novel RP-HPLC method for the detection and quantification of
artemether and lumefantrine in bulk powder and the pharmaceutical dosage forms.

I think I would be a good fit for your lab and the PhD position. I sincerely submit my application
for the PhD position. I have attached my CV and academic transcripts for your perusal.

Thank you for your time

Sincerely
Simon Nyarko
