To be eligible for direct entry to Australian
National Airline College you must:

Be able to pass an Aviation Medical, have a good

standard of English, be 18 years of age, have the finance
for the course (including living expenses) and meet all
other visa requirements.

1. Aviation Medical
To train as a pilot you must undergo an Aviation
Medical examination.
Note:
·Passing the medical is usually not difficult for anyone
with good general health and it is okay to wear glasses
or contact lenses or have had laser surgery
·If you already hold or have held a Class 1 Aviation
Medical from another country and can demonstrate
this, then a CASA Class 2 Aviation Medical is all that is
required.

2. Meet minimum English requirements
You will need to meet English language standards for both Department of
Home Affairs (for your student visa) and the Civil Aviation Safety Authority
(CASA) for your pilot training.

You may provide evidence of meeting these standards in one or more of

the following ways (A, B, C, D or E)

A.Undertake any of the English tests outlined in the table below and
achieve the minimum score/s outlined in Column 3

 B. Provide evidence that you have completed Secondary
Education where the principal language of instruction was
English.

“A” levels and International Baccalaureate are acceptable so long as the

language of instruction was in English

C. Provide evidence that you have a completed a CASA

Approved ELP Course.

D. You are a citizen of, and hold a valid passport issued by

the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, New
Zealand, or the Republic of Ireland.

E. You provide evidence that you have completed at least 5

years’ study in English in one or more of the following countries:
Australia, UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, or the
Republic of Ireland

3. Age
You need to be 18 years of age at the time you commence
training with us.
We can accept your application and send a letter of offer
before you are 18 however we cannot accept the signed
course agreement or your course deposit until your 18th
birthday.

4. Visa Requirements
You must meet the requirements of the Australian
Department of Home Affairs for issuance of a
student visa.

In Summary the main requirements to be issued a

Student Visa are
.Financial Evidence: depending on which country you are from you may
need to provide one of the following (use the link to the evidentiary tool
above to ascertain what the requirements are for you)
sufficient funds to cover your travel costs and 12 months of living and
tuition fees for you and your accompanying family members and
school costs for any school aged dependants, or
evidence that your spouse or parents are willing to support you and
they have an annual income of at least AUD 60,000 for single students
or at least AUD 70,000 for students that are accompanied by family
members
ii. Minimum education equivalent to Australian Year 11 (the second last year
of High School)
iii.That you are a Genuine Student. That is, not someone coming with the
purpose of immigrating rather than studying.

iv.That you are of Good Character (i.e you don’t have a serious criminal
history etc)

Appendix 1 Aviation Medical
If you are completing the Diploma of Aviation (Commercial Pilot Licence-
Aeroplane) you will need a Class 1 Aviation Medical issued by the Australian Civil
Aviation Authority (CASA). A Class 1 medical is only valid for 12 months, so we
suggest you do not do this too far ahead of your course commencement.

If you have held a Class 1 Aviation Medical in your own country (and can
evidence this) then you only need a CASA Class 2 Aviation Medical to sit your
CPL flight test.

If you are only conducting flight training for a Private Pilot Licence then a “Basic Class
2 Aviation Medical” (another category) is all you need.

Some of the medical tests you will need to undertake are an ECG (for the heart),
an audio test and an eye test.

Note: wearing glasses/contact lenses does NOT prevent you from passing this
medical. Your eyesight would need to be very poor before it becomes a
problem.

For basic questions you can contact us and we will try to help (we are not
aviation medical experts and may not be able to assist) or if your question is of a
more complex nature contact your nearest Aviation Medical Examiner.

Whilst the Aviation Medical can be done after arrival in Australia, it is always
advisable to do it before you depart if there is an approved examiner not too far
away from you.

There are a number of doctors overseas who are approved by the Australian
CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority) to conduct these examinations. CASA’s

Before you book your Aviation Medical you need your ARN (Aviation Reference
Number)

Appendix 1 Aviation Medical - continued
The ARN is just a number that the Civil Aviation Safety Authority
(CASA) will allocate you so that they can identify you in all future
dealings with you. For example, when you do an exam, a flight
test, security clearances, medicals, license issue etc
To get your ARN you need to complete the ARN “on line
application form

Note: You must upload a Certified or Notarised copy of your

Passport with your ARN Application. This means you will need to
get the photo/details page of your passport copied and then
have it certified or notarised for upload with your application.

It is possible to do the ARN after arrival in Australia but we would

much prefer you have it when you arrive.

THEN:
Once your ARN is issued you then need to register with the MRS
(Medical Records System) https://mrs.casa.gov.au/Applicant
Note: the certification you are registering for is a Class 1 medical
(unless you are in one of the other categories outlined above)

When registering there are a number of questions that might be

a little confusing so please take note of the following:
Class 1 Type of Operations Intended – select “Commercial
Pilot”
Select “Single Pilot”
Select Aircraft “<5700kg MTOW”
Once you are registered, you can then make your appointment
with a CASA approved medical examiner for your aviation
medical.
When you return home to convert your licence you will need to
pass a local aviation medical. You can contact your local Civil
Aviation Authority to find out more.
