Wedge 533™, Wedge 553™ & Wedge 503™

Handling Plugs
TenarisHydril Wedge 533, Wedge 553 and Wedge 503 handling plugs are designed to protect threads during running
with slip-type elevators. Drill pipe elevators or 18° bottleneck elevators are not recommended for use on upset tubing.
The OD lifting shoulder of the handling plug is slightly larger than the OD of the API tubing coupling for the applicable
tubing size. The handling plugs are rated consistent with API hoisting requirements and are drifted large enough to pass
internal test tools while providing protection to the box ID. These handling plugs also act as an emergency catch when
the pipe is hanging in the slips.

The following table shows the rating and dimensions for the single handling plug used for these three connections. The
handling plugs can be used with the Wedge 563™ connection if desired; however, handling plugs are typically not used
with threaded and coupled connections.

Note: If a pick-up chain or line is used to hoist the joint into the derrick, the chain or line must be double wrapped.
When lifting single joints with a chain or line, the chain or line must be secured in a manner which prevents its shifting
up over the box. The handling plug flange cannot be expected to prevent the chain or line from slipping completely off
the joint.

Wedge 513™ & Wedge 523™ Handling Plugs

TenarisHydril Wedge 513 and Wedge 523 handling plugs are designed to protect threads during running with slip-type
elevators. These handling plugs can also be used with collar-type elevators. The OD lifting shoulder of the 513/523
handling plug is equal to or slightly larger than the OD of the API casing coupling for the applicable casing size,
permitting it to be run through spiders and elevators. The 513/523 handling plugs are rated consistent with API hoisting
requirements and are drifted large enough to pass internal test tools while providing protection to the box ID. These
handling plugs also act as an emergency catch when the pipe is hanging in the slips.
