RESEARCH PLAN

I. RATIONALE

This study focuses on utilizing Oregano (Origanum majorana) leaves to

make a liniment that aids muscle pain.

Muscle pain or myalgia result from too much stress, tension or physical

activity. Some common causes include overusing the muscle during physical

activity, injuring the muscle while engaging in physically engaging exercise, and

skipping warmups and cool downs. (MedicineNet, 2019)

Oregano is also known as Wild marjoram, Mountain mint, Origanum,

wintersweet, and Winter marjoram. It is also a perennial herb which is widely well

known as herbal medicine for various many several diseases. The chemicals that

give it its one-of-a-kind, unique smell are the following: thymol, pinene, limonene,

carvacrol, ocimene, and caryophyllene. The extracts may be produced in various

ways like making it as supplements, medicine, ointments, and teas. (Flores J.L.A.,

Luciano A.N., and Villanueva C.S. (2017)

Liniment is a liquid or semi-liquid preparation that is applied to the skin as

an anodyne or a counterirritant. (Merriam-Webster, 2020)

II. A. RESEARCH QUESTIONS

This study aims to create a liniment for muscle pain using Oregano

(Origanum majorana) leaves.

Specifically, the researcher will seek to answer the following questions

upon the development of the study:

1. Can this liniment produced from Oregano leaves possible to help relieve muscle

pain?

2. Are there active components present in O. majorana leaves that can relieve

muscle pain?

3. Is there a significant difference between the research product and the

commercial ones in terms of cost?

II.B. HYPOTHESES

1. HO: The liniment produced from Oregano leaves cannot help relieve muscle

pain.

HA: The liniment produced from Oregano leaves can help relieve muscle pain.

2. HO: There are no active components present in O. majorana leaves that can

relieve muscle pain.

HA: There are active components present in O. majorana leaves that can relieve

muscle pain.

3. HO: There is not a significant difference between the research product and the

commercial ones in terms of cost.

HA: There is a significant difference between the research product and the

commercial ones in terms of cost.

III. EXPECTED OUTCOME

The researcher will be expecting to have a positive result towards the

conduct and the output of the study. The study aims to create a liniment that will

aid cure or relieve muscle pain or myalgia.

IV. RESEARCH METHODS

A. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES:

To be able to perform this study, the researcher will use Oregano

(Origanum majorana) in his study. The researcher will also use myrrh, alcohol,

cayenne pepper, mortar and pestle, and clean air-tight jars for liniment production.

The researcher will also use laboratory albino mice to test the output.

A. MAKING THE LINIMENT

The researcher will collect 50g of Oregano (Origanum majorana) leaves

and will be sun-dried for 2 hours. After two hours, the researcher will pound it into

small pieces using mortar and pestle. The researcher will then put the small

pieces of Oregano (Origanum majorana) leaves in an air-tight jar together with 5

grams of myrrh, 30g of cayenne pepper, and will fill it will alcohol until it covers the

mixture. Then the researcher will then put the lid on and will shake it to mix. The

researcher will do three trials, each with varying amounts of Oregano (Origanum

majorana) leaves. For the first trial, 10 grams of Oregano (Origanum majorana)

leaves will be used. 15 grams for the second trial, and 25 grams for the third trial.

B. STEEPING OF THE LINIMENT

The researcher will then let the liniment steep for a week, ensuring that he

shakes it once per day. After a week, the researcher will strain the liniment to get

rid of the residues. Then, the researcher will put the resulting liquid into an

another jar and test it into laboratory albino mice with induced muscle pain.

B. SAFETY AND PRECAUTIONS:

In carrying out a research, safety should be prioritized at all times. Here are

some guidelines and precautions that the researcher must remember in doing the

research or study:

1. Wear proper attire in laboratory including the laboratory gown, gloves, and face

mask.

2. When using lab equipment and chemicals, be sure to keep your hands away

from your body, mouth, eyes, and face.

3. After performing an experiment, you should always wash your hands with soap

and water.

4. Only materials you require for your work should be kept in your work area.

Everything else should be stored safely out of the way.

5. If an instrument or piece of equipment fails during use, or isn't operating

properly, report the issue to a technician right away. Never try to repair an

equipment problem on your own.

6. Clean up your workplace after doing your experiment.

C. STATISTICAL TOOLS TO BE USED:

These are the statistical tools that will be used as instruments in the

quantitative analysis of this research study:

1. The Kruskall- Wallis H- Test for Comparing More than Two Population (CRD:

Independent Random Samples) - If there are more than two populations to be

compared, The Kruskall- Wallis H test can be used. This is very useful for

completely randomized design (CRD) using Independent random samples.

FORMULA:

Where:

ni = sample size for a population

Ti = rank sum for population I

n = total number of observations

2. Two-Way ANOVA (Analysis of Variance)- A two-way ANOVA refers to an

ANOVA using two independent variables. Expanding the example above, a 2-way

ANOVA can examine differences in IQ scores (the dependent variable) by Country

(independent variable 1) and Gender (independent variable 2). Two-way ANOVA

can be used to examine the

interaction between the two independent variables. Interactions indicate that

differences are not uniform across all categories of the independent variables.

FORMULA:

Where:

F = Anova Coefficient

MST = Mean sum of squares due to treatment

MSE = Mean sum of squares due to error.

SST = Sum of squares due to treatment

p = Total number of populations

n = The total number of samples in a population.

SSE = Sum of squares due to error

S = Standard deviation of the samples

N = Total number of observations.
