Course Title : The Selection of the Civil Engineer: Basis for Selection

Topic : Introduction to General Ethics and Ethical Values

A. Summary

Civil engineering is one of the most diverse fields of engineering as it encompasses the
design construction and maintenance of infrastructure projects such as bridges, roads and buildings.
As the professionals responsible for the creation of structures that have a significant impact on society
and the environment, civil engineers must adhere to the basic principles of their code of ethics, as well
as the canons and guidelines, to ensure that the work is done with integrity and responsibility.
Furthermore, embracing ethical values and principles not only enhances the reputation of the
profession but also contributes to a better, safer and more sustainable world for future generations.

B. Meaning
The ethical values of civil engineers are the core beliefs and principles that guide their
behavior in their profession. These values are not just about following rules, but are established in a
more profound understanding of the duties and impacts of their work. The code of ethics for civil
engineers is a set of guidelines that outlines the expected behavior and responsibilities of
professionals in this field. This emphasizes the importance of integrity, honesty, and fairness in all
professional activities.

These values and principles are further delineated in the fundamental canons of civil
engineering, which act as practical guidelines for civil engineers. These principles serve as a roadmap
for engineers to take meaningful steps that clarify how they should address ethical dilemmas, avoid
conflicts of interest, and commit to continuous professional development. It emphasizes the
importance of clear communication, ensuring the accuracy of information, and always putting the
health and safety of the public first.
C. Reaction
As an aspiring civil engineer, the emphasis on ethical values and principles in civil
engineering is both reassuring and thought-provoking. It is reassuring to know that such framework
exists because it demonstrates the profession’s recognition of its responsibilities and its commitment
to meeting these responsibilities with the highest degree of integrity and professionalism. It is also
thought provoking because it serves as a reminder to engineers to reflect on their professional
conduct and ensure that their actions aligned with these ethical values and principles.

Furthermore, the fundamental canons and guidelines of the civil engineering profession
highlight the need for continual learning and professional competence. This is particularly important in
a field that is constantly evolving, with new technologies and methodologies emerging regularly. It is
the responsibility of civil engineers to stay up-to-date with these changes and to apply these latest
knowledge and techniques in their work. Additionally, the emphasis on sustainability and social
responsibility is something that resonates with me, as I believe that engineering should not only be
about creating structures but also about creating a better world for future generations.

D. Application
Last year, we have given a task by our instructor in ICE 06 to build a two0storey miniature
house by group. The project gave me firsthand experience with the ethical concerns that a civil
engineer would face. We had to consider not just the technical aspects of the design, but also the
social and environmental implications. It was critical to comprehend and analyze all the aspects
involved in the construction of a structure.

This experience had made us realize the importance of the ethical values and principles that
will guide our future civil engineering profession. It highlighted the need for a holistic approach to
engineering, one that takes into account not only the technical aspects but also the human and
environmental factors. Through that project, it required us to stay up-to-date with the latest
technologies and methodologies, and to apply them in a way that was socially and environmentally
responsible. Overall, the experience was a strong reminder of the responsibilities that come with
being a civil engineer, as well as the significance of following to a strict code of ethics.
