After watching the remarkable interview of Stephen Colbert to Neil deGrasse
Tyson at the Montclair Kimberley Academy last January 2010, a part of me was moved after seeing the world from another point of view. It made me realize that there are still a lot of things that we don’t know in science and there are also more unknown objects in the universe that have not yet unfolded. However, there were particular words in the interview that really caught my attention, which is when Stephen Colbert asks Neil deGrasse Tyson, “Is knowledge always a good thing?” in which Tyson answered yes and I find it true because the part of who we are is what we know, and our identity is based on how we see the world and our perspective to it. That is why having knowledge could be more valuable than to remain ignorant. In addition, Tyson says that people who don’t know and don’t value science are valuing ignorance, but Tyson doesn't judge them for that. He believes that people distrusted science because people don’t understand what it can do and how essential it is for every one of us, and that absence of understanding the power of science in our society is what makes people fearful and ignorant. Just because you don’t understand it doesn’t mean it’s bad for you. These simple words that have been said from Tyson really strikes me hard. It was an eye opener to me in the real world that it’s important to gain knowledge in order to broaden our perspectives in different aspects in life, and to be a better version of ourselves and the world we live in. This 1 hour and 24 minutes insightful interview of Stephen Colbert to Neil deGrasse Tyson has never been a waste of time. It’s a must-watch for everyone so they will know more things about science, specifically the importance of science literacy (knowledge) in our life and its relationship with our society.
