1. What is professionalism and code of ethics (generally)?

- Professionalism has two different meaning; one is that professionalism is the skill, can provide
good judgement, and polite behavior that is expected from a person who is trained to do a job.
Second is professionalism is commonly understood as an individual’s adherence to a set of
standards, code of conduct or collection of qualities that characterize accepted practice within a
particular area of activity. One reason professionalism is important because it’s an outward display
of a person attitude toward a job and the company. Professionalism can be shown towards the other
people by listening respectfully when another person is talking. It should be followed by making
eye contact periodically and nod when appropriate. Do not take phone calls while someone else
is talking and to be specific professionalism is all about giving respect to another person.

- A professional code of ethics is a set of principles designed to help a business govern its decision-
making and distinguish right from wrong. Often referred to as an ethical code, these principles
outline the mission and values of an organization, how the professionals within the organization
are supposed to approach problems and the standards to which employees are held.

- In the future, when we as a student takes another step in being a professional its important to
know the factors and the importance of professional ethics. Because it is designed to ensure
employees are behaving in a manner that is socially acceptable and respectful of one another. It
establishes the rules for behavior and sends a message to every employee that universal compliance
is expected.

2. What is professionalism and code of ethics for Civil Engineers?

- Being a professional engineer not always depend on that we have some merit to show off or
having a higher study degree than other people it has a deeper meaning and a big responsibility.
Civil Engineers are expected to exhibit the highest standards of honesty and integrity. Engineers
must hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public. Engineering is an important and
learned profession, as an aspiring member of this profession. Engineers are expected to exhibit the
highest standards of honesty and integrity. Civil Engineer has a direct and vital impact on the
quality of life for all people.

- Also, the services provided by engineers require honesty, impartiality, fairness, and equity, and
must be dedicated to the protection of the public health, safety, and welfare. Engineers must
perform under a standard of professional behavior that requires adherence to the highest principles
of ethical conduct. In college, especially that we are taking an online exam we can develop this
important competency by making sound choices regarding academic integrity and always being
honest with those around us.

- Lastly, Civil Engineers shall act in professional matters for each employer or client as faithful
agents or trustees and shall avoid conflicts of interest. Civil Engineers shall act in such a manner
as to uphold and enhance the honor, integrity, and dignity of the civil engineering profession.

3. What are the different Ethical Problems?

- Social and ethical issues in engineering, ethical principles of engineering, professional code of
ethics, some specific social problems in engineering practice: privacy and data protection,
corruption, user orientation, digital divide, human rights and access to basic services.

- Engineering ethics in terms of civil engineer mostly in terms of designing an infrastructure,

because it concerns an issues that arise during the design of technological products, processes,
systems, and services. This includes issues such as safety, sustainability, user autonomy, and
privacy. Ethical concern with respect to technology has often focused on the user phase.
- It also deals with construction industry where it comprised of but are not restricted to: conflict of
interest, inflation of bills, professional incompetence, poor work delivery, fraud, bribery,
professional misconduct, intimidation and kickbacks among several other ethical problems.

4.How do you solve these ethical problems (techniques in solving them)?

- First of all, in dealing such ethical problems, we can be professional means we need to deal with
our work in pure intention. In becoming a civil engineer there’s a lot of temptation because in a
project there’s a lot of money involved and fraud in terms of project. This would result for a
engineer to engage in criminal activities, I’m saying not all engineers but most of the upper level
of the industry do this job. Mostly when we talk about the projects led by the government, it states
that the overall project cost is more than a million but, when we revealed the truth, the total cost is
lesser than the stated value. In most cases, we could avoid the ethical issues in civil engineer if we
adapt the professionalism into ourselves. We must focus only on the safety, economical and
sustainability of every project that we had to ensure the professionalism in our workplace.

- Second is to respect other people’s opinion, I still remember my professor said that in dealing
with a co-worker especially when both of you is an engineer. Do not judge other person works like
telling his/her work is wrong because in Republic Act 544 it includes that not all civil engineer has
the same education and expertise. Also, to be practical not all person has the same mindset of what
we are going to do in a project. We must uphold the integrity and honesty everywhere we work
and signing a contract as a civil engineer.

-Lastly, we must never forget to always tell the truth and avoid criminal conducts just to ensure
that we could get some merit into that project. Always do our job as a professional and maintain
professionalism every day.
