Canon 1. Engineers shall hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public and shall
strive to comply with the principles of sustainable development in the performance of their
professional duties.

- Engineers shall hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the public. If engineers’
judgment is overruled under circumstances that endanger life or property, they shall notify their
employer or client and such other authority as may be appropriate. Also, it states in canon one that
engineers are encouraged to adhere to the principles of sustainable development to protect the
environment for future generations. Engineers can play an essential role in sustainable
development by planning and building projects that preserve natural resources, are cost-efficient,
and support human and natural environments. A closed-loop human ecosystem can be used to
illustrate the many activities of engineers that support sustainable development. An example of
canon 1 is significant of a structural engineer is to design an infrastructure because they need to
ensure the safety but economical of the design. This part of designing was crucial because it deals
with lots of revision and approval by the higher authority and the person who would design the
project. The designing process gives a person multiple ideas, and every detail is significant because
one mistake could cause the loss of life in the construction process.
Canon 2. Engineers shall perform services only in areas of their competence.

- This canon only states that as a civil engineer, the person would only take projects based on their
competence, knowledge, and expertise. Because many projects require expertise to avoid mistakes
and failure of the design, especially when you're a construction engineer, your expertise is to
construct the project based on the structural engineer's design. Imagine if the person as a
construction engineer orders a task to design a residential plan; it's good to try something out of
your expertise, but at the same time, your expertise doesn't align with the task that you're going to
do. As licensed engineers, we may have the idea and knowledge to do many things involved in
civil engineering works. Because in civil engineer, we have four different categories: structural,
construction, water, and geological engineer. This specialization differs from one another because
they have their expertise and practical application. We must perform our work or services to those
areas of our expertise to avoid mistakes. Still, I could be sure that civil engineers could take
considerable expertise as long as they have knowledge and experience in those projects.
Canon 3. Engineers shall issue public statements only in an objective and truthful manner

- Engineers should act for each employer or client as faithful agents or trustees. Avoid deceptive
acts and conduct themselves honorably, responsibly, ethically, and lawfully to enhance the
profession's honor, reputation, and usefulness. Being honest is essential for anyone, but it is
necessary in the case of engineers because of the implications of having a design for something
that is not as good as it should be. The engineers must accept that their work will often involve
projects that could be potentially harmful to people. Engineers are expected to exhibit the highest
standards of honesty and integrity, according to the services provided by engineers that require
honesty, impartiality, fairness, and equity. They must be dedicated to the protection of public
health, safety, and welfare. If engineers break or break ethics: engineers will be held personally
responsible and may revoke their license and go to jail as it states in RA 544 in a section that
engineers that may have been found guilty may have their license can be revoked.

Canon. 4 Engineers shall act in professional matters for each employer or client as faithful agents
or trustees, and shall avoid conflicts of interest

- A good working relationship allows an engineer to demonstrate their credibility, professionalism,

and other non-technical qualities. Engineers offer intangible services, the quality of which cannot
be judged by prospective clients. Therefore, a client’s experience is one of the most significant
ways the engineer will be considered. Regardless of marketing and promotional material, actions
speak louder than words. The client’s experience will shape their comments in public and
contribute to the engineer’s reputation and that of their firm in the marketplace.

Although it takes time, building and maintaining a client relationship is a cost-effective exercise
that contributes to productivity and efficiency. Complaints and misunderstandings cost time and
money – a good client relationship is like an insurance policy that ensures a quicker and easier
resolution of any difficulties or conflicts. In the case of Canon 4, it states that an engineer must
always uphold integrity and honesty towards the employer or client because, as professionals, we
shouldn’t accept bribes and compensation to gain merit. More importantly, engineers shall not use
any confidential information coming from them to make a personal profit. Such action is adverse
to the interest of their clients.
Canon. 5 Engineers shall build their professional reputation on the merit of their services and shall
not compete unfairly with others.

- Engineers shall not give, solicit, or receive directly or indirectly from other personnel or some
unlawful consideration to gain merit. Every possible way an engineer would work with others is
to maintain integrity and honesty with every client to ensure a strong relationship between them.
We must maintain professionalism in every project we have; engineers may show their merit and
achievement, but those credits come from good results. For example, you’re the type of civil
engineer, regardless of the payment you’ve received in designing an infrastructure. It doesn’t
matter as long as you enjoy your work and the hard time that you put into it would be worth
completing. I heard many newly licensed civil engineers experience less payment than paying
them a lot because their work is much more complex than others; another reason they go into the
engineering field is that they expect higher payment than other courses. Being a civil engineer is a
good thing because, as a people, we design buildings and bridges to connect the future. We ensure
that every building that we go and stay in is safe from every possible encounter of our nature.
Being a civil engineer is not about the money but the work and merit that a person could provide
for their client to provide sustainable infrastructure.

Canon 6. Engineers shall act in such a manner as to uphold and enhance the honor, integrity, and
dignity of the engineering profession and shall act with zero tolerance for bribery, fraud, and
corruption.

- It’s an engineer’s job to build things, make things better, and develop new solutions to
complicated problems. Engineers have created new forms of transportation, new ways of
generating energy, and built a communication network that spans the globe, allowing for
instantaneous information retrieval. Engineers are held to high standards with their work, certainly
higher than most other careers. But they should also be held to high ethical standards to ensure all
their work isn’t harming people or eroding public trust. Engineering projects can have a direct
impact on people’s safety. Whether someone works in infrastructure, electrical, or digital
engineering, their work impacts the everyday lives of civilians. All aspiring engineers know this
and strive to do their best work, ensuring nothing but the highest standards. An appreciation for
ethics would reinforce this, as not only is doing an excellent job of professionalism in the content
of engineering, it's also a matter of morality.

Canon 7. Engineers shall continue their professional development throughout their careers and
shall provide opportunities for the professional development of those engineers under their
supervision.

- They are continuing professional development as a civil engineer; it is more important than ever
that you take responsibility for your personal development to maintain your competence by
keeping your knowledge and skills current. Professional development can help today’s engineers
that are looking to improve through educational opportunities and advanced degrees. Licensed
engineers are also required to keep up with the latest trends and change the industry to maintain
their various licenses. Engineers that attain higher levels of education are better trained and have
the essential skills in their profession. Lastly, engineers should keep current in their specialty by
engaging in professional practice, participating in continuing education courses, and attending
seminars and professional meetings.
