Inspection of scrubber droplet

Next opportunity *
separator
Distribution to operators and owners of installations Product concerned
concerned WÄRTSILÄ® SOx scrubbers

Introduction
The purpose of this bulletin is to highlight
the importance of regularly inspecting the
droplet separator in the scrubber system.
A polluted droplet separator might cause an
excessive amount of droplets leaving the
scrubber, as well as lowering performance
of the Exhaust Gas Cleaning systems
(EGC).

Preventive action
It is recommended to inspect the droplet
separator together with nozzle inspection
(every 6 months).
Warning
The scrubber system utilizes steam as part
of droplet separator cleaning sequence.
The steam can cause severe damage if the
necessary precautions are not taken.

Validity
Until further notice.
Before taking any action, always check the
available online systems for the latest
revision of this document. Any locally stored
or printed version is considered to be an
uncontrolled document.

* Next opportunity: Action is necessary or recommended, but can be taken at the next opportunity. There is no
direct danger.

Introduction
The droplet separator and wet filter are located within the scrubber body.
The purpose of the droplet separator is to remove drops from the exhaust, to limit
droplets exiting the scrubber.

The droplet separator will be clogged if the droplet separator flushing is not functioning,
see Figure 2.

Recommendation
Regular inspections and maintenance of the scrubber must be performed to ensure safe
operation of the Exhaust Gas Cleaning systems:
· Inspect the droplet separator on a regular basis. It is recommended to inspect
the droplet separator together with nozzle inspection (every 6 months).
· Distribute this information to all maintenance teams concerned.

Instructions
The droplets are formed in the scrubber from washing of the exhaust gases and the
droplet separators prevent them from exiting.
During scrubber inspections it is advised to also check the spray pattern and the spray
efficiency of the droplet separator cleaning nozzles.

WARNING:
Be careful when steam cleaning starts, under certain pressure conditions the casing
steam might exit the scrubber through the open hatch. Steam might cause a burn.
Have a person standing at the steam isolation valve prepared to close the valve in case
steam exits the scrubber.
Do not put your hands or head inside the scrubber when steam is in operation.

Check of spray pattern can be done by:

· Isolating/locking out any combustion units (typically boilers or engines)
connected to the scrubber.
· Open the upper hatch on the scrubber.
· Start scrubber, after the “scrubber running” status achieved, stop scrubber,
washing sequence will be initiated.
· Once it’s been observed that the steam cleaning system distributes steam
through the droplet separator, isolate the steam supply to prevent steam from
escape to the funnel casing.
· Once droplet separator washing sequence starts, visually check spray pattern.
· Reinstall hatch on the scrubber, open earlier isolated steam supply valve.
