Objectives
Use clues from context to learn & infer meaning of new vocabulary.
Provide synonyms or exact explanation or rephrasing to unknown words.
Identify key ideas of the reading from detailed information & be able to provide brief summary.
Be familiar with the overall sequence of ideas in the passage.
Input
1) Matching: Students will be given the text and will be asked to skim and scan it quickly to get the
gist or the overall idea of the reading (the first sentence of each paragraph will be crossed out or
deleted). Then in pairs they will be given pieces of papers. On each one there will be written the
first sentence of each paragraph (jumbled ordered) which they will be asked to add back into the
most appropriate place.
And then, after a second reading, students will be to asked respond to multiple-choice questions
assigned for the reading. (10 min)
2) Reaction: Students will be asked to complete all or some of the following sentences individually
and then discuss their reactions in group: What I found most
interesting/boring/shocking/amusing/irritating/incredible about this text was ... (5 min). I will
provide an example.
Closure
Quick summary of the main ideas for the passage using your own words in pairs (2-3 sentences). (5 min)
(alternative: each pair prepares 2-3 questions about the text to another pair)
Assessment
Crossword puzzle (A/B): Each pair will be handed in 2 versions of the puzzle: A contains words that are
missing from B and B contains words that are missing from A. Each student will be asked to explain the
words written in his version to his/her partner and the latter has to figure it out and put it in the correct
place in the puzzle. The words will be related to the text- familiar and new words. (5min)
