CANDLEWICK INTERNATIONAL

NURSERY OPERATIONS
Maintaining Excellence in Automated Mass Seedling Production for
Global Forestry Requirements
20 MILLION

Candlewick International is a leader in the

seedling production industry.

The company’s mechanized nursery facility

in Ayungon Municipality in Negros Oriental
gives Candlewick the capacity to produce
20 million tree seedlings per year.

1 2 THE MECHANIZED EDGE

Candlewick’s nursery operations have the

mechanized edge that helps ensure clients
get their seedlings in their desired
numbers at scale and in record time.

The system includes electronically

controlled tray fillers [1] that ensure seed
trays are correctly filled with soil and are
not over compacted. The system can
automatically plant and process an average
800 seed trays an hour [2]. A roller dibbler
[3] creates the cavity where the seeder
drum automatically drops the seeds. Once
the seeds grow in their respected trays,
they then passes through the water
channel sprinkler [4] prior to transfer to the
growing areas.

MODERN FACILITIES
FOR SEEDLING GROWTH

Candlewick’s nursery growing areas are

vast and with good reason. It’s indoor [1]
and outdoor [2-3] growing facilities allow
for the accomodation of 20 million
seedlings at any one time, meeting any
seedling demand as required.

The indoor growing areas are equipped

with water misters while the outdoor
areas have automated water sprinklers.
These help ensure that ambient
temperatures necessary for good plant
growth are maintained and that the
seedlings are given adequate moisture to
ensure high survival and uniform growth.

YOUR SPECIES OF CHOICE 1 2
Forestry projects vary in scope and
objectives. Candlewick offers a wide
variety of tree species for use in any
forestry project ranging from biomass tree
plantations to biodiversity restoration.

Candlewick works closely with its clients

to determine their specific future forest
condition, and plans out the appropriate
tree species for mass seedling production
and delivery.

Tree species such as Toog [1], Tuai [2],

Anabiong [3], and Narra [4] are some
examples of the local tree species
Candlewick produces. Established
industrial species such as Acacia mangium
are also available. 3 4

PROPAGATION VERSATILITY 1 2
Asexual propagation through cuttings is
another advanced technology Candlewick
uses for seedling production.

Candlewick holds extensive motherstock

hedge gardens [1] where key tree species
are grown for their cuttings. Once
collected, cuttings are given root induction
[2] to promote growth. The cuttings are
then placed in a rooting bed [3] for growth
and recovery. Once they reach the
desirable size they are made ready for
planting [4].

This technology provides the company

with added versatility in producing desired
tree species at scale for its clients.

LOGISTICS

As part of its vertically integrated business

model, Candlewick nursery operations are
backed by significant logistic assets.

The company ensures that all seedlings

are delivered safely and in good health to
a client’s target site.
EXCLUSIVE DISTRIBUTOR
OF WORLD-CLASS TECHNOLOGY

Candlewick International is in close

partnership with Urbinati Srl., a global
leader in nursery technology.

Urbinati designs and produces modular

nursery systems for the automaton of
production processes necessary for mass
tree seedling production. Urbinati products
and solutions are now present in over 100
countries worldwide.

Candlewick International serves as the

exclusive distributor of all Urbinati products
and services in East Asia.

THE COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE

People and communities constitute a key

factor in the success of Candlewick nursery
operations that underpin the success of any
forestry endeavor.

Consistent with its total forestry solutions

package, Candlewick Internatioanl has
established its wide network of upland
community cooperatives that play an
important role in nursery operations as well
as in other aspects of forest development.
These include other important activities such
as mother tree identification, seed
collection, seedling transport, site
preparation, planting, area maintenance,
forest protection, and site patrolling among
others.

Candlewick works with communities

because communities make it work.
THE FUTURE IS GREEN

Candlewick nursery operations also play a

key role in the company’s effrots to
implement programs designed to catalyze
community development while mitigating
climate change.

In partnership with the Philippine

Department of Environment and Natural
Resources, Candlewick International is
implementing the Carbon Offset
Development Enterprise (CODE) Program.
CODE is a 30-year forest restoration effort
aimed at restoring degraded and marginal
lands in the Island of Negros in the
Philippines. It is a climate and poverty
intervention program achieving effective
forest landscape restoration through the
establishment of extensive carbon-rich
forests [1], in the process creating significant
livelihood opportunities for local
communities [2].

CODE will deliver tangible climate, 1

community and biodiversity benefits. The
program’s focus on using indigenous pioneer
tree species [3] attractive to local fauna [4]
will help restore biodiversity while the tight
relationship with local upland communities
provides the vital social licensing and
community participation necessary to
ensure forest restoration success. Additional
forest ecosystem benefits such as nature-
based tourism [5] provides further
community benefits. 2 4
The carbon credits to be produced by CODE
already has waiting buyers. A number of
international energy companies wishing to
offset their carbon emissions have already
issued offtake agreements with Candlewick
to purchase the carbon credits to be
produced by the CODE program thus ensure
program feasiblity and sustainability.

Programs like CODE are but one of the many

nature-based solutions offered by
Candlewick International as part of its suite
of forestry development solutions.
