Radical Notation
𝒏
𝒂
- called a radical sign.
n - is called the index.
a - the expression under the radical sign is called the
radicand.
nth Roots
1
If n is a positive integer, then 𝑛
𝑎 = 𝑎 (assuming
𝑛
𝑛
𝑎 is a real
number).
The Rational Exponent and the Power Rule
1
If n is a positive integer and 𝑎 is a real number, then then
𝑛
1
(𝑎 )𝑛 = 𝑎. In radical notation: ( 𝑛 𝑎)𝑛 = 𝑎.
𝑛
Square Roots
If a is a nonnegative real number, then 𝑎 is the principal square
root of a, and − 𝑎 is the negative square root of a.
RADICAL EQUATION
A radical equation is an equation which the variable
appears in a radicand
a. 𝒙 = 𝟕
b. 𝒂 + 𝟐 = 𝟑
𝟑 𝒎
c. =𝟖
𝟐
STEPS:
1. Isolate one of the radicals on one side of the equation. (An
equation may have more than one radical)
2. Raise both sides of the equation to the power corresponding to
the index of the radical.
3. If the equation still contains a radical, repeat Steps 1 and 2.
4. Solve the equation after all the radicals have been eliminated.
5. Be sure to check all possible solutions in the original equation
and eliminate any extraneous solution.
SOLVING RADICAL EQUATIONS
Examples: Check:
𝟏. ) 𝒙 + 𝟓 = 𝟒 (Square both sides) 𝒙+𝟓=𝟒
( 𝑥 + 5)2 = (4)2 𝟏𝟏 + 𝟓 = 𝟒
𝑥 + 5 = 16 𝟏𝟔 = 𝟒
𝑥 = 16 − 5 𝟒=𝟒
𝒙 = 𝟏𝟏
