SONG

Objectives
Students can do the following :
1. Interpret the social functions and linguistic elements of song lyrics related to
teenage life SMA/MA/SMK/MAK.
2. Capture the meaning contextually related to the social functions and linguistic
elements of song lyrics related to adolescent life SMA/MA/SMK/MAK.

1. Definition : Song is a composition of tone or voice in sequence, combination and


temporal relation to produse a musical compositian that has unity and continuity.
Purpose : Songs are used to express feeling and idea in an entertaining world. Songs
can be used to deliver social criticism. The moral values are hidden in the lyrics.
2. Text Structur
a. Intro
Is the beginning of the song, usually the singer's voice is not heard (only the
instruments).
b. Verse
Is the introductory part to the chorus.
c. Refrain
Transition from verse to chorus.
d. Chorus
The main part, is usually the easiest to remember.
e. Bridge
Connecting the chorus to the text chorus or to the coda.
f. Coda
Ending of the song.
3. Language features
a. Imagery
Imagery describes about feelings and imotions. A song usually tries to describe the
feelings that the writer is feeling.
b. Rhythm
Rhythm here is used to create mood. For example, if we are sad and listen to a
song with a slow rhythm, then we will be carried away by the song. Slow rhythm,
then we will be carried away by the song. So, rhythm creates mood!
4. Figures of speech
a. Metaphor
Comparing two things that are not a like to suggest that they actually have
something in common. At first glance at first glance, the two things being
compared are not related, but there is actually a similarity between the two things.
e.g. "Time is a thief" or "Her hair was silk".
b. Simile
Compares two things using “like” or “as’’. One thing described with something
similar by using the word 'like' or 'as' e.g. "My love is like a redrose".
c. Hyperbole
A dramatic language. Big exaggeration, usually with humor. Things are
exaggeratedly described, sometimes intriguing because it is too much. e.g. "That
math homework took me 8 million years to finish".
d. Personification
An object appear like a person. Objects (not human) have human-like abilities.
e.g. "The wind whisper" or "The snowflakes danced in the wind"
e. Allititration
The repetation of the same beginning sound in a series of words.
